Misheard Song Lyrics -> Stories -> Lauryn Hill

Misheard lyrics (also called mondegreens) occur when people misunderstand the lyrics in a song. These are NOT intentional rephrasing of lyrics, which is called parody. For more information about the misheard lyrics available on this site, please read our FAQ.

This page contains a list of the songs that have stories about their misheard lyrics submitted.

Song names are sorted by first letter, excluding A and The. This is sorted by song title only, not by song title and performer. So if two different performers preformed the same song, you'll see misheard lyrics for both on the same page (provided the song title was spelt the same both times, and misheard lyrics have been submitted for both!).

All My Time album at Amazon.com
Lauryn Hill's, "Doo Wop (That Thing)"
The Misheard Lyrics:
Bad things, bad things, bad things
The Real Lyrics:
That thing, that thing, that thing
The Story: One time I was in the car with some friends and this song was on and we were all singing it. My friends sang that verse the right way (but i didn't know that yet) and I thought that they were wrong so I wanted to prove to them that i knew the right lyrics, so the next time it came on I sang it really loud my way. Let's just say I looked dumb! - Submitted by: Mindy
Lauryn Hill's, "Everything Is Everything"
The Misheard Lyrics:
My rhymes is heavy
Like my mom's sister, Betty.
The Real Lyrics:
My rhymes is heavy
Like the mind of Sister Betty.
The Story: My friend and I were walking down the street rapping this song back and forth. When it came to that part, this is what I said not knowing for years that I was wrong. My friend couldn't control his laughter as he explained to me that she was saying 'the mind of Sister Betty' referring to Betty Shabazz, the widow of Malcolm X and important figure in black history, and not one of Lauryn Hill's overweight aunts. - Submitted by: Matt
Lauryn Hill's, "When It Hurts So Bad"
The Misheard Lyrics:
I love real, real hard ones.
The Real Lyrics:
I loved real, real hard once.
The Story: One of my friends was playing the respective album in the background. While she and I were preparing dinner, this line emerged. I dropped my spoon in shock. She asked what was wrong, to which I asked if she heard what I thought I heard. When she asked me to elaborate, I repeated the misheard line. And after a minute's silence, she literally fell to the floor laughing. From there I guessed she didn't hear what I heard, then. - Submitted by: Monokini
