Misheard lyrics (also called mondegreens) occur when people misunderstand the lyrics in a song. These are NOT intentional rephrasing of lyrics, which is called parody.
For more information about the misheard lyrics available on this site, please read our FAQ.
This page contains a list of the songs that have stories about their misheard lyrics submitted.
Song names are sorted by first letter, excluding A and The. This is sorted by song title only, not
by song title and performer. So if two different performers preformed the same song, you'll see
misheard lyrics for both on the same page (provided the song title was spelt the same both times, and
misheard lyrics have been submitted for both!).

Light up the sky like a prayer
Light up the sky like a flame
The Story: I could have sworn it was another pre-Madonna reference. - Submitted by: Cody Finke
Raise them up, raise them up, raise them up, raise them up.
Remember, remember, remember, remember!
The Story: Of course I was signing it out loud at work one day when a co-worker had to correct me. He was laughing so hard, I still couldn't get the right lyric out of him. - Submitted by: jen
We give up!! We give up!! We give up!! We give up!!
Remember!, Remember!, Remember!, Remember!
The Story: I am 39 years old and ALL my life up till now, I thought the singers backing up Irene Cara in the song were singing "We give up!! We give up!! We give up!!". I am laughing thinking that for 33 years, I thought that they were singing that. Actually it was "Remember, Remember, Remember". Haha. - Submitted by: Codi Preston D.

Take your pants down
And make it happen.
Take your passion
And make it happen.
The Story: Have always thought it was this and sung it this way until my Mom heard me. She couldn't stop laughing and just kept saying "It's Passion. PASSION" - Submitted by: Andy
Take your pants off
And, baby, hands off!
Take your passion
And make it happen.
The Story: I was convinced from childhood until just a couple of years ago that these misheard lyrics had to be the correct (albeit puzzlingly perverted) ones. - Submitted by: Lady Stardust
What a feeling (I am Lucifer)
Keep believing (I am risen now)
What a feeling (I am music now)
Being's believing (I am rhythm now)
The Story: I never questioned my interpretation of the lyrics since it seemed so natural for the fallen angel to be rising again and so many songs had a religious message. - Submitted by: Nicholas Akerlund
Take your pants down and make it happen
Take your passion and make it happen
The Story: For years I thought Flashdance was a movie about pornography because of that lyric in the song. All I ever remember seeing of the movie was the previews featuring a scantilly clad woman dancing and pouring water on herself. So the lyric really made sense. - Submitted by: Randy James
Take your pants down. Oh, take your pants down.
Take your passion and make it happen.
The Story: We misheard, laughed at, and sang this lyric for about 20 years, having lost track of the title or source of the song. Finally, I caught it being played over the Flashdance movie credits and immediately looked up the lyrics on line. I sent it to Jon Carroll of the San Francisco Chronicle because he collects and writes columns about what he calls Mondegreens, most of which are misheard lyrics. (Old ballad misheard: they killed the Lord of Whatsis and Lady Mondegreen. Real lyric: . . .and laid him on the green.) Jon Carroll can be found at sfgate.com - Submitted by: Shim Farrell
I'm in Riverdale

Take your pants off, and baby have some
Take your passion and make it happen
The Story: it constantly plays this way in my brain. - Submitted by: D
Take your pants off, and make it happen
Take your passion, and make it happen
The Story: I guess when I first heard it I knew the English word pants but not passion (I was 11), and when you sing it wrong for a while your brain thinks you are doing it right. It was only a few years ago I realized I had been wrong all these years - Submitted by: Linda
Take your passion and make it happen.
Take your pants down and make it happen.
The Story: We were in Grade 3 at school at the time. Anything that seemed remotely rude was automatically considered to be funny. - Submitted by: Scott McPhee
What a feeling, please believe me I can have it all, now I'm dancing for my life
Take your pants down and make it happen
Pictures come alive, you can dance right through your life
What a feeling, being's believin' I can have it all, now I'm dancing for my life
Take your passion and make it happen
Pictures come alive, you can dance right through your life
The Story: What is there to say? Around the time that this song was in the charts, I was in Grade 3 and 4 at school. The misheard third line of the verse I cited here, was one I heard from a boy in my class. - Submitted by: Scott McPhee
