Misheard Song Lyrics -> Stories -> Huey Lewis & The News

Misheard lyrics (also called mondegreens) occur when people misunderstand the lyrics in a song. These are NOT intentional rephrasing of lyrics, which is called parody. For more information about the misheard lyrics available on this site, please read our FAQ.

This page contains a list of the songs that have stories about their misheard lyrics submitted.

Song names are sorted by first letter, excluding A and The. This is sorted by song title only, not by song title and performer. So if two different performers preformed the same song, you'll see misheard lyrics for both on the same page (provided the song title was spelt the same both times, and misheard lyrics have been submitted for both!).

Huey Lewis & The News', "Heart Of Rock 'n' Roll"
The Misheard Lyrics:
The heart of Rock 'n' Roll is in Cleveland.
The Real Lyrics:
The heart of Rock 'n' Roll is still beating.
The Story: I thought until this moment that it was 'Cleveland', because of the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame being there. - Submitted by: Paul
Huey Lewis & The News', "I Wanna New Drug"
The Misheard Lyrics:
I wanna new truck.
The Real Lyrics:
I wanna new drug.
The Story: I had a boss (who will be simply named as Dave A.) who thought Huey Lewis was singing about wanting a new *truck*, not a new drug. When asked how on Earth he could make sense of this within the context of all the other lyrics, he said something like: 'Well, you know. I wouldn't want a truck to spill or make me feel helpless or wondering what to do'. When asked about coming in a pill, he assumed that it was in reference to a very compact truck. - Submitted by: Garnet H
Huey Lewis & The News', "If This Is It"
The Misheard Lyrics:
I've been phonin', I'm tired of moanin'
I heard you say "Damn it, I'm not home"
The Real Lyrics:
I've been phonin' night and mornin'
I heard you say "Tell him I'm not home"
The Story: The misheard lyrics are funny, although they are somewhat vulgar. LOL - Submitted by: Isac
Huey Lewis & The News', "The Heart Of Rock & Roll"
The Misheard Lyrics:
They say the harder rock and roll is to be them.
The Real Lyrics:
They say the heart of rock and roll is still beatin'.
The Story: I was holding a party for the Super Bowl, so I found my old 'Sports' album. I wiped the dust off the back of it and found that I was wrong. I looked up the lyrics on the Internet (there was no Internet back when the album originally came out) and found the real lyrics to several of my favorite songs. - Submitted by: John C
Huey Lewis & The News', "The Heart Of Rock 'n' Roll"
The Misheard Lyrics:
C.C., San Antone, liberty Town
Boston and Baton Rouge.
The Real Lyrics:
D.C., San Antone, and the liberty town
Boston and Baton Rouge.
The Story: I was born in Corpus Christi, hence the CC and not DC. - Submitted by: Sherri
Huey Lewis & The News', "Walking On A Thin Line"
The Misheard Lyrics:
That's when I was five foot four
The Real Lyrics:
Is that what I was fighting for?
The Story: My husband loves this song and refuses to admit he is singing it wrong, if and when it comes on radio he shouts the misheard lyric I listed. - Submitted by: Jenn
Huey Lewis & the News', "Heart of Rock and Roll"
The Misheard Lyrics:
They say the heart of rock and roll is forbidden
And from what I'm saying, I'll be leaving
Now the hobo made me bell and breathin'
But the heart of rock and roll's Mr. Beedton
The Real Lyrics:
They say the heart of rock and roll is still beating
And from what I've seen I believe 'em
Now the old boy may be barely breathing
But the heart of rock and roll is still beating
The Story: When we were kids we knew a Mr. Beedton but didn't understand the important connection with Huey Lewis. Dude's the heart. - Submitted by: Black Peter
Huey Lewis & the News', "The Heart of Rock and Roll"
The Misheard Lyrics:
They say the heart of rock and roll is the beating
And from what I've seen, I believe 'em
Now the oboe may be barely breathing
But the heart of rock and roll, heart of rock and roll is the beating.
The Real Lyrics:
They say the heart of rock and roll is still beating
And from what I've seen, I believe 'em
Now the old boy may be barely breathing
But the heart of rock and roll, heart of rock and roll is still beating.
The Story: My little brother called me stupid and laughed in my face. When my mother overheard my protests, I lost the resulting argument on accuracy, but won on logic (by my count) -- MTV & videos were HUGE, so how could anyone think Rock might be dying? On the otherhand, everyone loves 'the beating' of Rock (drums, bass) but who can stand listening to popular music from the 1920's and '30s with its yodeling clarinets and oboes? - Submitted by: Rhampton
