Misheard Song Lyrics -> Stories -> Hank Williams

Misheard lyrics (also called mondegreens) occur when people misunderstand the lyrics in a song. These are NOT intentional rephrasing of lyrics, which is called parody. For more information about the misheard lyrics available on this site, please read our FAQ.

This page contains a list of the songs that have stories about their misheard lyrics submitted.

Song names are sorted by first letter, excluding A and The. This is sorted by song title only, not by song title and performer. So if two different performers preformed the same song, you'll see misheard lyrics for both on the same page (provided the song title was spelt the same both times, and misheard lyrics have been submitted for both!).

Hank Williams', "Cold, Cold Heart"
The Misheard Lyrics:
Why can't I freeze your doubtful mind and melt your cold, cold heart?
The Real Lyrics:
Why can't I free your doubtful mind and melt your cold, cold heart?
The Story: I was young when I first heard this, and was just beginning to grasp such metaphors as melting one's heart. I supposed that somehow freezing one's mind was another metaphor, and that it fit the song somehow equally well. And I guess I thought the freeze vs. melt contrast to be a neat juxtaposition. - Submitted by: Francine Harper
Hank Williams', "Jambalaya"
The Misheard Lyrics:
We gotta go forty kilos down the bayou.
The Real Lyrics:
He gotta go, pole the pirogue down the bayou.
The Story: A lot of words in this are hard to understand. I guess they are Cajun words. Long before I had any idea this song wasn't supposed to be all in standard English, I made out what best I could of the words. - Submitted by: Sheila Munroe
Hank Williams', "There’s a Tear in My Beer"
The Misheard Lyrics:
All these boobs that I’ve found can’t really stop me now.
The Real Lyrics:
All these blues that I’ve found can’t really stop me now.
The Story: When I first heard this, I thought he was finding a lot of boobs that he couldn’t stop looking at. - Submitted by: Frank Jameson
