Misheard Song Lyrics -> Stories -> Gavin DeGraw

Misheard lyrics (also called mondegreens) occur when people misunderstand the lyrics in a song. These are NOT intentional rephrasing of lyrics, which is called parody. For more information about the misheard lyrics available on this site, please read our FAQ.

This page contains a list of the songs that have stories about their misheard lyrics submitted.

Song names are sorted by first letter, excluding A and The. This is sorted by song title only, not by song title and performer. So if two different performers preformed the same song, you'll see misheard lyrics for both on the same page (provided the song title was spelt the same both times, and misheard lyrics have been submitted for both!).

Gavin DeGraw's, "Chariot"
The Misheard Lyrics:
Oh Cherry
Your golden waves
or
Oh shariot
Your golden waves
The Real Lyrics:
Oh chariot
Your golden waves
The Story: My sister and I were listening to this song. When once we had turned it off, she asked me if the guy was saying 'cherry'. At first I didn't understand what she was talking about. But then I realized she was talking about 'Chariot'. I told he was saying chariot. She said, 'Is he saying shariot, or chariot?' She was so confused, I started laughing and she finally got it. - Submitted by: Kelsey
Gavin DeGraw's, "Get Lost"
The Misheard Lyrics:
I wanna get a prostitute.
The Real Lyrics:
I wanna get lost with you.
The Story: I heard the song for the first time at a store. Thanks to the low volume and general shopping noise, I couldn't work out what he was saying. So when the chorus arrived with this line, it made me wonder why anyone would go to the lengths of writing a song about something that can be considered stigmatising. - Submitted by: Devil Jones
Gavin DeGraw's, "I Don't Wanna Be"
The Misheard Lyrics:
I don't need to be anything other than a prison guard's son
I don't need to be anything other than a specialty sign
I don't need to be anyone other than a bird that's dipped its soles in wine
Part of where I'm going is nowhere where I'm coming from.
The Real Lyrics:
I don't need to be anything other than a prison guard's son
I don't need to be anything other than a specialist's son
I don't have to be anyone other than a birth of two souls in one
Part of where I'm going is knowing where I'm coming from.
The Story: I must have listened to the song at least 100 times, and I STILL can't hear the 'real' lyrics. - Submitted by: Feldinaut
Gavin DeGraw's, "I Don't Wanna Be"
The Misheard Lyrics:
I don't wanna be anything other than
A birthday cake soaked in wine.
The Real Lyrics:
I don't wanna be anything other than
The birth of two souls in one.
The Story: I absolutely would not believe my friends when they told me the actual lyrics. I suppose I was rather attached to my 'birthday cake' version of the song. - Submitted by: Ashley
