Misheard lyrics (also called mondegreens) occur when people misunderstand the lyrics in a song. These are NOT intentional rephrasing of lyrics, which is called parody.
For more information about the misheard lyrics available on this site, please read our FAQ.
This page contains a list of the songs that have stories about their misheard lyrics submitted.
Song names are sorted by first letter, excluding A and The. This is sorted by song title only, not
by song title and performer. So if two different performers preformed the same song, you'll see
misheard lyrics for both on the same page (provided the song title was spelt the same both times, and
misheard lyrics have been submitted for both!).
Dreams Can Come True: Greatest Hits, Vol. 1 album at Amazon.com
Chains, spin doctor, looking if you can't anymore
You know you got to have 'em, you know you got to be strong
Dreams can come true, look at me babe I'm with you
You know you got to have hope, you know you've got to be strong.
The Story: Remembered this song from my childhood and wanted to learn the lyrics so I could busk with it. It took me a long time to find this song because I was looking under 'chains.' Luckily I found the correct lyrics and didn't go out singing the misheard ones. - Submitted by: Rose
Don't pick up the airphone
Don't pick up the airphone.
You know you gotta have hope
You know you've got to be strong.
The Story: I work at a supermarket, and they play this song every two days (the music is on a loop). The speakers in the store are at a low volume, so I can never hear the correct words. The airphone is the name of the intercom system in the store. - Submitted by: DarkDan
Dreams can come true, look at every vomit of you.
Dreams came come true, look at me, babe I'm with you.
The Story: No real story, but I knew I misheard these lyrics and I honestly had to read the actual lyrics to check what she supposedly sings and I thought: that doesn't match the syllables she sings. When I checked back with the track I realized that she cheats on the syllables:
... look at me babe, I'm with-a-you - Submitted by: Tom
Dreams can come true, look at me ba-ba-du-du-du.
You know you got to have 'em, you know you've got to be strong.
Dreams can come true, look at me babe I'm with you
You know you got to have hope, you know you've got to be strong.
The Story: Could never hear what was sung. Likely because she didn't clearly separate the "babe" and "I'm". Anyway, so whatever this gibberish of ba-ba-du-du-du is, maybe it's code for something else, you know you got to have some of it, and be strong too. - Submitted by: Kenny
Greenskin, come do. Look in here we vomited.
You know you've got to have some. You know you've got to be strong.
Dreams can come true, look at me babe I'm with you
You know you got to have hope, you know you've got to be strong.
The Story: No funny story, I just can't hear the words as written. - Submitted by: Cheeser
I knew I had to have you.
My holes have never been tight.
I knew I had to have you
My hopes didn't let me down.
The Story: Once I heard it once I couldn't unhear it - Submitted by: Yolo
Oh me so tight
Put your arms around me
You make me feel so sick.
Hold me so tight
Put your arms around me
You make me feel so sick.
The Story: Gabrielle has a voice that while sounds interesting (depending on whether you're in the mood to tolerate her slightly nasally shrill), makes it sometimes hard to hear what she's saying, hence these lines of misheard lyrics. With a haphazard blast of strange broken English and a sentiment of repulsion contrary to the general theme of the song, I wondered what the songwriter had been on while writing this. - Submitted by: Monokini
Battery
Out of reach
The Story: It wasn't just me. After finding out the real words to the song, having sung 'Battery' for 2 years, it turned out my Dad had been singing the same as I did. - Submitted by: Emma Jayne Pursey
Gonorrhea, so far
Out of reach, so far
The Story: My aunt was singing the misheard lyrics in a supermarket, as a woman and her 3-year-old were walking past. The woman looked mortified. - Submitted by: Alisha
Malory, so far, I've never driven in your car
Out of reach, so far I never had your heart
The Story: This song came out when we were kids. My sister was the one who misheard it but she was so confident those were the right words that we sang her version for years until we saw the real lyrics online. We still sing her version XD. - Submitted by: Bas
Valerie
Out of reach
The Story: My aunt and I were driving in her car when this song came on. We both said in unison, 'Ohh..love this song' and started singing away. When it came to the chorus, I sang the correct word and she sang the misheard lyric. It was so funny because she was so into it. Even now, the habit is so instilled in her that she knows the correct lyric but still sings 'Valerie'. - Submitted by: Tami
Valery, couldn't see you were never meant for me.
Out of reach, couldn't see we were never meant to be.
The Story: My mother was singing this off the top of her head in the car when she was giving me and my mates a lift into town. How embarrasing!! - Submitted by: charlie
Cateri, I never had your heart

Diarrryyyyy (Diary)
Out of reach
The Story: It is the theme song from "Bridget Jones Diary", so I just assumed that was the song name. - Submitted by: Blair Westwood
Valerie, don't fart, I never ate your arm
Out of Reach, so far, I never had your heart
The Story: Basically, this is what I heared everytime this song came on and I prefer my lyrics to the actual ones, they're more interesting. - Submitted by: Heifetz
Valerie, so far
I never had your heart.
Out of reach, so far
I never had your heart.
The Story: Someone in the office asked out loud what the song was called when we heard it on the radio. I said 'Valerie', and then other people in the office brought it to my attention what the really lyrics were. - Submitted by: Bel
But the tooth was hard to find
But the truth was hard to find
The Story: I commonly got mistaken about the word "tooth" for "truth". - Submitted by: Cody Finke
