Misheard lyrics (also called mondegreens) occur when people misunderstand the lyrics in a song. These are NOT intentional rephrasing of lyrics, which is called parody.
For more information about the misheard lyrics available on this site, please read our FAQ.
This page contains a list of the songs that have stories about their misheard lyrics submitted.
Song names are sorted by first letter, excluding A and The. This is sorted by song title only, not
by song title and performer. So if two different performers preformed the same song, you'll see
misheard lyrics for both on the same page (provided the song title was spelt the same both times, and
misheard lyrics have been submitted for both!).

And if ugly fools are kind, Alfie
And if only fools are kind, Alfie
The Story: For a long time I thought it said 'ugly fools are kind', an idea arising from a thought that ugliness makes people need to be humble, and therefore kinder than good-looking people, who can afford to be more proud. - Submitted by: Trina Lufkin
Is it just for a moment we live?
Is it just for the moment we live?
The Story: What a difference an article can make! For years I heard this like the misheard version above, and thought the line to be a hyperbole on the brevity of the human lifespan. Recently realizing that the actual words are 'for the moment', not 'for a monent', I realized that the message is altogether different from what I thought. Living 'for the moment' has nothing to do with the length of life, but refers to living for now as if the past and future didn't matter. Seeing how much difference a change of article makes here, I got to wondering how these meanings would be expressed in languages that don't have articles. - Submitted by: Trina Lufkin

L.A. is a great big freeway.
Get all hunkered down and buy a car.
L.A. is a great big freeway.
Put a hundred down and buy a car.
The Story: The misheard lyrics represent the way I've heard these lines since way back when. I first got onto knowing these real lyrics when I first looked up previous entries for misheard lyrics to this song on amiright.com! - Submitted by: Francesca Burleson

I know I'll never love this sway again
So I'll keep holding on, with all the goodies gone
I know I'll never love this way again
So I keep holding on before the good is gone
The Story: I used to think that she'll never again dance doing the sway because there were too many bad memories from the last time; not only that, somebody ate all the candy in the bowl. - Submitted by: Al
I know I'll never love this square again
I know I'll never love this way again.
The Story: Back when I was a little boy, I absolutely loved Sesame Street & was learning shapes at the time that I first started hearing this song, plus I am from the Boston area, so naturally,I thought she was singing "this squayah" instead of "this way". - Submitted by: Dan Cronan
