Misheard lyrics (also called mondegreens) occur when people misunderstand the lyrics in a song. These are NOT intentional rephrasing of lyrics, which is called parody.
For more information about the misheard lyrics available on this site, please read our FAQ.
This page contains a list of the songs that have stories about their misheard lyrics submitted.
Song names are sorted by first letter, excluding A and The. This is sorted by song title only, not
by song title and performer. So if two different performers preformed the same song, you'll see
misheard lyrics for both on the same page (provided the song title was spelt the same both times, and
misheard lyrics have been submitted for both!).

Dido's,
"Don't Think Of Me"
I hear your hair is smellin' clean.
I hear your house is smart and clean.
The Story: I don't even know how I got this one wrong, I'd had the cd for years. One day I just realised the words running through my head didn't sound quite right. Decided to look them up... and they definitely weren't. - Submitted by: Cohort
I want to be a hamster again.
I want to be a hunter again.
The Story: Just picture me and my mother walking about in B&Q gently singing this version, realising what the real lyrics are, and cracking up. Classic times =) - Submitted by: Suzie
I want to be a huntsman again.
I want to be a hunter again.
The Story: Her English accent makes the T in hunter sound more like a “ts” so I heard huntsman. - Submitted by: Alexander Moir
Dido's,
"My Life For Rent"
If my life is forrint
If my life is for rent
The Story: I kept hearing this on the radio on my way to work, but never heard the title. I couldn't find the word in any dictionary. No one could tell me what 'forrint' means. I was really incensed that the stupid woman was using a made-up word, and complained loud and long to anyone who'd listen. I wondered why they gave me strange looks. - Submitted by: Rose
But I promised New York City the sun again.
But I promised you you'll see the sun again.
The Story: The first time I heard this song, I didn't know the name of it and it was pretty late at night. I didn't have my radio on that loud, and this is how I heard the line. I thought it was about the aftermath of 9/11, and that she couldn't help her friend at that time, as she had needed to go and help the people of New York. I couldn't help thinking how wonderful that was. So I was quite bummed when I realized the real words listening to it louder the next time. I still sing it my way though, and I really do think it sounds like she's singing 'New York City'. - Submitted by: Wendy
I, want to thank you
For giving me the last day of my life.
I, want to thank you
For giving me the best day of my life.
The Story: I thought this was just part of the cynical, sad aspect of the song. - Submitted by: Rick
My tea's gone cold, I wonder why, Agarap Bererop
My tea's gone cold, I wonder why I got out of bed at all.
The Story: It's sounds like "Agarap Bererop" - Submitted by: Kanzin Ashieh
My tea’s STONE COLD, I’m wondering why, I got out of bed at all
My tea's gone cold, I wonder why I got out of bed at all.
The Story: Tea going “stone cold” is an English expression for it having turned (gone) cold. North American ears hear differently from UK artist written/performed lyric. - Submitted by: Mash Lingo
Please don't go, I wonder why
Get out of Planet Earth.
Tea's gone cold, I'm wondering why
I got out of bed at all.
The Story: An Egyptian boy at my school was singign the song at me like this. Since then, boys call him "Mr. Out of Planet Earth". - Submitted by: Sarah
Dido's,
"This Land Is Mine"
Slender smile, but I'll let you in
I'll let you never get under mine.
This land is mine, but I'll let you rule
I'll let you navigate and demand.
The Story: i was singing this song on a long car journey. My father pointed out the song was called "This Land Is Mine", not "Slender Smile". As a reply, I said nothing; I simply hit myself in the face. - Submitted by: Pippa Aka Razorbill
I will go down with fishes
So I can put bars up and surrender.
I will go down with this ship
And I won't put my arms up and surrender.
The Story: My mom and I were in the car, She was singing along and then she exclaimed, 'Wait, fishes? Dido's got the Mafia after her?!' - Submitted by: Paint It Black GXT
And if you live by the road-side it's over
And if you live by the rules of 'it's-over'.
The Story: I didn't think that could be the actual lyrics but that's exactly what I heard. - Submitted by: Mike
And if you live by the road-side, it's all right
And I'm sure that that makes sense
And if you live by the rules of it's over
Then I'm sure that that makes sense
The Story: Heard this song multiple times as a little boy in my Dad's car, I always imagined Dido was saying that if her boyfriend lives by the roadside, then it makes sense for her to go and tell him she still loves him. - Submitted by: Brandon Thompson
Galway
always
The Story: It made me think of Irish people doing an American accent 'cause of Dido singing in an American accent also 'cause I thought Dido was Irish but then realised she was English. - Submitted by: Gabriel
I will go down with his s***
And I will put my legs up and surrender
There will be no white flag above my whore.
Well I will go down with this ship
And I won't put my hands up and surrender
There will be no white flag above my door.
The Story: I thought to myself, 'Dido has a dirty side' until I saw the video and made sense of the REAL lyrics! lol :o)~ - Submitted by: Celica
I will go down with this s***
I will go down with this ship
The Story: Given that she admired Eminem's use of "Thankyou" for "Stan" & his work in general, I thought something like this would be par for the course for her. - Submitted by: Eric Andrews
I will go down with this s***
I will go down with this ship
The Story: Must have needed the toilet - Submitted by: Rob
I will not go down with this s#%*
I wont go down with this ship
The Story: Heard this on the radio as a kid a mumber of times, and thought that this lyric meant that Dido did not tolerate the bad situation she is in and is doing so, won't be brought down by other peoples faults or issues that she was caught up in. - Submitted by: Estelle
I won't go down with this s***
I will go down with this ship
The Story: I realized I was wrong when I saw the lyrics LOL! - Submitted by: Timi Zhuo
I won't put my eyes out and surrender.
I won't put my hands up and surrender.
There will be no black cat above my door
There will be no white flag above my door
