Misheard Song Lyrics -> Stories -> Dexy's Midnight Runners

Misheard lyrics (also called mondegreens) occur when people misunderstand the lyrics in a song. These are NOT intentional rephrasing of lyrics, which is called parody. For more information about the misheard lyrics available on this site, please read our FAQ.

This page contains a list of the songs that have stories about their misheard lyrics submitted.

Song names are sorted by first letter, excluding A and The. This is sorted by song title only, not by song title and performer. So if two different performers preformed the same song, you'll see misheard lyrics for both on the same page (provided the song title was spelt the same both times, and misheard lyrics have been submitted for both!).

Dexy's Midnight Runners', "Come On Eileen"
The Misheard Lyrics:
Come on Eileen
Oh I swear mon-a-mie
At this moment, you mean everything
You in that dress
In my thought I confess
That you're dirty!
The Real Lyrics:
Come on, Eileen
Well, I swear (what he means)
At this moment, you mean everything
With you in that dress
Oh, my thoughts, I confess
Verge on dirty.
The Story: When this song was really popular, we had an older family friend who was called Eileen. And being a teenager at the time, we thought the song was quite funny (misheard lyrics and all). - Submitted by: Angeljasmine
Dexy's Midnight Runners', "Come On Eileen"
The Misheard Lyrics:
Come on, Eileen
Oh, I swear, I believe
At this moment, you mean everything
You wear that dress
La la la la, I confess
But you're dirty
Come on, Eileen.
The Real Lyrics:
Come on, Eileen
Well, I swear (what he means)
At this moment, you mean everything
With you in that dress
Oh, my thoughts, I confess
Verge on dirty
Ah come on, Eileen.
The Story: We thought this song was really offensive because he was calling Eileen dirty, and telling her she should just give up and put out! - Submitted by: Koko Phac
Dexy's Midnight Runners', "Come On Eileen"
The Misheard Lyrics:
GIOVANNI!!!
All our journey riegns
So then saddle full for the radio,
But the billion hearts are far too low.
Ooh, our mothers prayed.
Son of a young hoodlum, oh! You proved (young hoodlum)
So real (young hoodlum)
Now I must say, hold the devil Toora loora, Toora Loora, Aye!
Oh, we can sing it just like our fawful dome!
Come on, Eileen
Oh, I swear! (Reminisce)
I feel small but, you are ELOQUENT!!!
Well you're in a dress,
Oh, I thought like the rest.
But you're dirty!
Ah, come on, Eileen!
These people 'round here...
With their bad eyes, sunken, smoke-dried face,
It resembles to what they're fighting is
But nun, uhhhhhhhhh, (young hoodlum)
No nun, uhhhhhh (young hoodlum)
We are far too young and clever (to remember)
Toora Loora Toora Loora Yay
A little hump is true for everyone!
Come on, Eileen,
Oh, I swear, (by the knees)
Ah, come on, yes,
Take an elephant!
Put your address,
Oh I thought (Like the rest)
But you're dirty,
Ah, come ON Eileen!
The Real Lyrics:
Come on Eileen!
Poor old Johnny Ray
Sounded sad upon the radio, he moved a million hearts in mono.
Our mothers cried and sang along and who'd blame them.
Now you're grown, (you're grown up) so grown, (you're so grown up) now I must say more than ever.
Go Toora Loora Toora Loo-Rye-Aye and we can sing just like our fathers.
Come on Eileen, I swear (well he means)
At this moment you mean everything,
With you in that dress my thoughts I confess verge on dirty
Ah come on Eileen.
These people round here wear beaten down eyes
Sunk in smoke dried faces they're so resigned to what their fate is,
But not us, no not us we are far too young and clever.
Remember Toora Loora Toora Loo-Rye-Aye
Eileen, I'll hum this tune forever.
Come on Eileen, I swear, well he means
Ah come on let's take off everything,
That pretty red dress Eileen (Tell him yes)
Ah come on let's, ah come on Eileen, please.
The Story: Who can understand this song without lyrics? This is what the song sounded like to me as a kid. It used to be a game for me, before the Internet had everything on it, to try and guess the lyrics of this song. I listened long and hard, trying to decipher what this song was about, up until I was about 12, when my dad said that the song had dirty lyrics in it. I asked him, "What dirty lyrics?" He said he had no idea. Funnily enough, I was convinced that it said, "A little hump is true for everyone" ever since I was about 8, so I thought that perhaps the song was about naughty women and humping, and the lyrics were so muffled that they still allowed it on the radio. The lyric about "These people 'round here's faces resemble what they're fighting" was always confusing because it didn't seem to fit with the rest of the song. I thought that maybe the song was talking about a war, and how some soldiers become so violent that they end up as bad as the people they're trying to fight against. I breathed a sigh of relief when I finally worked up the courage to Google the real lyrics. It's not a song about humping (although that could happen at the end I suppose) and it's not a song about Eileen being a whore. Thank god! - Submitted by: A Nanny Mouse
Dexy's Midnight Runners', "Come On Eileen"
The Misheard Lyrics:
Now I must say on the double
Things round here have sh*t ! I said
Too-ra loo-ra too-ra loo-rye-aye
The Real Lyrics:
Now I must say more than ever
Things round here have changed
Too-ra loo-ra too-ra loo-rye-aye
The Story: The accent can be confusing sometimes. There were already plenty of dirty jokes conserning this spritey tune anyway. When it topped the U.S. Hot 100 in early 1983 it knocked "Billie Jean" by Michael Jackson from that lofty position. This joyful #1 was knocked off the top spot by ANOTHER Michael Jackson hit , which was "Beat It". - Submitted by: Super Duper Pac - Man

The Misheard Lyrics:
You threw, Superglue.
The Real Lyrics:
You've grown, so grown.
The Story: This was the only line of the song that I couldn't decipher, and it had a 'real surreal appeal' for me. Then I heard the cover by Skyclad, the mystery was solved, but I felt kind as if I'd lost something special. I guess some mysteries are better left alone. - Submitted by: Mary Beaird
