Misheard Song Lyrics -> Stories -> Curtis Mayfield

Misheard lyrics (also called mondegreens) occur when people misunderstand the lyrics in a song. These are NOT intentional rephrasing of lyrics, which is called parody. For more information about the misheard lyrics available on this site, please read our FAQ.

This page contains a list of the songs that have stories about their misheard lyrics submitted.

Song names are sorted by first letter, excluding A and The. This is sorted by song title only, not by song title and performer. So if two different performers preformed the same song, you'll see misheard lyrics for both on the same page (provided the song title was spelt the same both times, and misheard lyrics have been submitted for both!).

Curtis Mayfield's, "Diamond in the Back"
The Misheard Lyrics:
Sunroof top
Diggin' the scene with a Gangsterline
The Real Lyrics:
Sunroof top
Diggin' the scene with a gangsta lean
The Story: I thought a gangsterline was some kind of female version of a gangster - Submitted by: Chris
Curtis Mayfield's, "Superfly"
The Misheard Lyrics:
Single file
The Real Lyrics:
Superfly
The Story: This was a few years ago, when they showed that 'Pure Funk' music compilation commercial non-stop. There were clips of a bunch of songs that were on the cd. My little sister watched way too much tv, so she would always mimick the commercials. So we are driving in the car one day and my sister starts to sing all the little clips on the commercial. But then, instead of saying 'superfly' in the song Superfly, she said 'single file!'. It was hilarious. That's how we sing that song now. - Submitted by: Punky
