Misheard Song Lyrics -> Stories -> Collective Soul

Misheard lyrics (also called mondegreens) occur when people misunderstand the lyrics in a song. These are NOT intentional rephrasing of lyrics, which is called parody. For more information about the misheard lyrics available on this site, please read our FAQ.

This page contains a list of the songs that have stories about their misheard lyrics submitted.

Song names are sorted by first letter, excluding A and The. This is sorted by song title only, not by song title and performer. So if two different performers preformed the same song, you'll see misheard lyrics for both on the same page (provided the song title was spelt the same both times, and misheard lyrics have been submitted for both!).

Just took my son to a trip to Maine.
The Real Lyrics:
Just tilt the sun toward a new domain.
The Story: Ive always heard "Just took my son to a trip to Maine". I just found out after I told my 5 year old son while watching "Let's Make a Deal" where someone passed on a trip to Maine that there was a song like that. Only to find out in 2021 I've been wrong for almost 30 years. - Submitted by: Michael C Cecil

Collective Soul's, "Heaven Let You Light Shine Down"
The Misheard Lyrics:
You haven't let your light shined out
The Real Lyrics:
Heaven let your light shine down
The Story: Well since I first heard the song I never really 'got' what they were meaning and I was shocked that they would use such bad grammar in one of their best songs , so one day I was helping a neighbor with her English homework and this song came on , when I told her my feelings on the band's bad usage of grammar , she started laughing hysterically , and then told me the real lyrics to the song. Needless to say , it makes alot more sense now! - Submitted by: Racheal
