Misheard Song Lyrics -> Stories -> Cheech & Chong

Misheard lyrics (also called mondegreens) occur when people misunderstand the lyrics in a song. These are NOT intentional rephrasing of lyrics, which is called parody. For more information about the misheard lyrics available on this site, please read our FAQ.

This page contains a list of the songs that have stories about their misheard lyrics submitted.

Song names are sorted by first letter, excluding A and The. This is sorted by song title only, not by song title and performer. So if two different performers preformed the same song, you'll see misheard lyrics for both on the same page (provided the song title was spelt the same both times, and misheard lyrics have been submitted for both!).

Cheech & Chong's, "Acapulco Gold"
The Misheard Lyrics:
No fuss, no strain, no stems, no seeds.
Acapulco gold is badass weed.
The Real Lyrics:
No stems, no seeds that you don't need
Acapulco Gold is badass weed
The Story: I lived in the bay area across from San Francisco in the 1960's and 1970's . I think it was KFRC that use to play that little ditty at times. It was not Cheech and Chong but someone else sang the verses. - Submitted by: Brian King
Cheech & Chong's, "Acapulco Gold"
The Misheard Lyrics:
No stems, no seeds that you don't need
Acapulco Gold is bad (as weed)
The Real Lyrics:
No stems, no seeds that you don't need
Acapulco Gold is badass weed
The Story: I snuck into my much-older sister's boyfriend's 8-track collection and misunderstood almost the entire album. - Submitted by: Pieza
Cheech & Chong's, "Sister Mary Elephant"
The Misheard Lyrics:
Then I went downstairs to look for a job.
The Real Lyrics:
Then I went downtown to look for a job.
The Story: When someone else was writing their misheard lyrics, they said, "Then I went downstairs to a quiet job,"they also said that the original lyrics were "Then I went downstairs to look for a job." However, the original lyrics that the person had said are incorrect. And I know that they're incorrect because as I was listening to Sister Mary Elephant many times, one of the students, as he is reading his essay (played by Tommy Chong), is actually saying, "Then I went downtown to look for a job. I even looked up the lyrics to Sister Mary Elephant, and they also said, "Then I went downtown to look for a job." - Submitted by: Sophia Eggleson
