Misheard Song Lyrics -> Stories -> Cast of 'Oklahoma'

Misheard lyrics (also called mondegreens) occur when people misunderstand the lyrics in a song. These are NOT intentional rephrasing of lyrics, which is called parody. For more information about the misheard lyrics available on this site, please read our FAQ.

This page contains a list of the songs that have stories about their misheard lyrics submitted.

Song names are sorted by first letter, excluding A and The. This is sorted by song title only, not by song title and performer. So if two different performers preformed the same song, you'll see misheard lyrics for both on the same page (provided the song title was spelt the same both times, and misheard lyrics have been submitted for both!).

Oklahoma! (1980 London Revival Cast) album at Amazon.com
Cast of 'Oklahoma''s, "Oh, What A Beautiful Morning"
The Misheard Lyrics:
The corn is a** high to an elephant, sigh!
The Real Lyrics:
The corn is as high as an elephant's eye.
The Story: When I was growing up in a rural area everything was 'a** high to this or that.' 'A** high to a gnat' was belittling; 'a** high to an elephant' was big, so it fit. The 'sigh!' seemed like a natural for the end of a musical line. After all if it's that big, isn't it worth a 'sigh' from a spritely lass like Shirley Jones? - Submitted by: Ben Moffett
Cast of 'Oklahoma''s, "Surrey With The Fringe On Top"
The Misheard Lyrics:
Can I take you out in Missouri
With a fridge on top?
The Real Lyrics:
Can I take you out in a surrey
With the fringe on top?
The Story: The first time I heard this song was on a CD in a car with my three year old son, driving through Saint Louis. The second I misheard this lyric, there was a guy passing me driving a station wagon, with (you guessed it) a refrigerator, tied to the top of his car. I thought this was a thing in Missouri, between the song, and seeing the guy, at the same time, in Missouri! - Submitted by: Dan Fletcher
