Misheard lyrics (also called mondegreens) occur when people misunderstand the lyrics in a song. These are NOT intentional rephrasing of lyrics, which is called parody.
For more information about the misheard lyrics available on this site, please read our FAQ.
This page contains a list of the songs that have stories about their misheard lyrics submitted.
Song names are sorted by first letter, excluding A and The. This is sorted by song title only, not
by song title and performer. So if two different performers preformed the same song, you'll see
misheard lyrics for both on the same page (provided the song title was spelt the same both times, and
misheard lyrics have been submitted for both!).
O Canada
Our home and native land
True paid red love in all the sons' command
With glowing hearts we see the rise
The true north strong and free
From far and wide
O Canada,
We stand on guard for the
God keep our land, glorious and free
O Canada, we stand on guard for the
O Canada, we stand on guard for the
O Canada
Our home and native land
True patriot love in all thy sons' command
With glowing hearts we see thee rise
The true north strong and free
From far and wide
O Canada,
We stand on guard for thee.
God keep our land, glorious and free
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee
The Story: I came to Canada when I was about 5 and started learning English when I was about five, and I never saw the lyrics written down until I was about 13. The only time I ever heard people saying the word "patriot" was when they talked about people in the USA, and based off of the usage of it, I assumed it was an insult and thought that that word wouldn't be in the anthem, so I assumed it was "paint-red" because "patriot" in the anthem sounds more like "pait-rid" than "pay-tree-ot", and it still sounds like "paint red" to me even after knowing it's "patriot", and the flag is red and white, so I assumed it was related to that somehow. Also, since English isn't my native language and I mostly focused on learning how to talk to modern English speakers instead of people from like the middle ages, I assumed "thy" was a weird pronunciation of the word "the", and always thought "thee" was also "the" because "the" sometimes sounds like "thee", and as a result was always confused when the anthem ended because I never knew what we were standing on guard for. - Submitted by: WhyDoYouNeedMyName
True patriot love in all our sunts command...
We see thee rise the true Lord strong and free.
True patriot love in all our sons command
We see thee rise the true North strong and free.
The Story: Well, like most people, I learned the words as a child and sang it like this for years, until I was teaching it to some of the kids I work with. One of the other women pulled me aside and let me know that not only did I not know the words to the song I was teaching, but I was passing my mistakes along! - Submitted by: Sarah
