Misheard Song Lyrics -> Stories -> Burton Cummings

Misheard lyrics (also called mondegreens) occur when people misunderstand the lyrics in a song. These are NOT intentional rephrasing of lyrics, which is called parody. For more information about the misheard lyrics available on this site, please read our FAQ.

This page contains a list of the songs that have stories about their misheard lyrics submitted.

Song names are sorted by first letter, excluding A and The. This is sorted by song title only, not by song title and performer. So if two different performers preformed the same song, you'll see misheard lyrics for both on the same page (provided the song title was spelt the same both times, and misheard lyrics have been submitted for both!).

Burton Cummings', "Stand Tall"
The Misheard Lyrics:
All your feeling right now
Is a super human fly
The Real Lyrics:
All you're feeling right now
Is silly human pride.
The Story: After a while, quite a long while ( 10 years ) I started thinking, it can't be a Super Human Fly ... that really doesn't make sense. So I asked a mate ... Michael, a real smart arse, he thought he knew every thing ... and he looked at me, that smug smart arse look on his face and said, it's 'Silly hue and cry'. So for the next 40 years I went with that ... until now, when I just read your version and bugger me, I was still wrong ... 50 years later I finally get the right words to it and, you know what, I think I like 'Super human fly better' ... it's catchy ... don't you think? - Submitted by: Kez

Burton Cummings', "Stand Tall"
The Misheard Lyrics:
Stentor
or
Stencil
The Real Lyrics:
Stand tall!
The Story: I was a kid when this song came out; my friend and I debated about the lyrics to this song. We happened to be studying biology in school. So I thought the line was 'Stentor, don't you fall'. My friend insisted that it was 'stencil.' - Submitted by: Steve Shapiro
