Misheard lyrics (also called mondegreens) occur when people misunderstand the lyrics in a song. These are NOT intentional rephrasing of lyrics, which is called parody.
For more information about the misheard lyrics available on this site, please read our FAQ.
This page contains a list of the songs that have stories about their misheard lyrics submitted.
Song names are sorted by first letter, excluding A and The. This is sorted by song title only, not
by song title and performer. So if two different performers preformed the same song, you'll see
misheard lyrics for both on the same page (provided the song title was spelt the same both times, and
misheard lyrics have been submitted for both!).
But Brandy you misunderstood
'Cause I can't see how he could
Wanna chase something that's so good
But maybe you misunderstood
'Cause I can't see how he could
Wanna change something that's so good
The Story: I thought that Monica was addressing Brandy directly in this part of the song because I had misheard Maybe as Brandy! - Submitted by: Jacynthia Maries
Can't be sure that Brandy's not on the phone
You can't destroy this love I found
The Story: One of the reasons I misheard this lyric as the above is that both Brandy and Monica were on the phone at this point of the song in the music video! - Submitted by: Jacynthia Maries
You need to give it up.
Hattabody knows.
It's not hard to see, the boy is mine.
You need to give it up.
Had about enough.
It's not hard to see, the boy is mine.
The Story: I've been singing it as hattabody knows since the song came out. It wasn't until last year while watching Glee, when they did the Brandy/Monica special that I was able to hear it clearly say "had about enough." The best part of this story is me trying to explain to my friends what I thought the lyrics really were. I told my one friend first. We were then in the car with my other friend trying to explain it to her. She starts hysterical laughing thinking I was singing "had a bloody nose." We then tell her no, and proceed to explain I was singing "hattabody." My girlfriend had to put some sass into it and snap her fingers in front of her face and say "hattabody knows" in order for my friend to get it. Now hattabody is a part of our everyday vocab. - Submitted by: Lisa
The boy's mind
The boy is mine
The Story: When I heard the beginning of the song, it sounds like "the boy's mind". It's also apparent we hear "mind" instead of "mine", and vice versa. - Submitted by: Cody Finke
