Misheard lyrics (also called mondegreens) occur when people misunderstand the lyrics in a song. These are NOT intentional rephrasing of lyrics, which is called parody.
For more information about the misheard lyrics available on this site, please read our FAQ.
This page contains a list of the songs that have stories about their misheard lyrics submitted.
Song names are sorted by first letter, excluding A and The. This is sorted by song title only, not
by song title and performer. So if two different performers preformed the same song, you'll see
misheard lyrics for both on the same page (provided the song title was spelt the same both times, and
misheard lyrics have been submitted for both!).
I Fought the Law: The Best of the Bobby Fuller Four album at Amazon.com
I broke the law in the carwash.
I fought the law and the law won.
The Story: My boyfriend and I were on our first date (this was 16 months ago!) and this song came on. He had it in his cd player as a punk cover. And I told him, "Oh, I love this song!!" Then I sang, 'I broke the law in the car wash!' He started laughing so hard at me it took him awhile before he could tell me the correct lyrics. It was really quite embarassing!!! - Submitted by: Cristina
Hop off the log and hope on.
I fought the law and the law won.
The Story: My then-4-year-old daughter sang this in the car to me one morning, as it was playing on the radio. And I haven't been able to sing it straight since. - Submitted by: Sarah Vincent
I f***ed the wall and the wall won.
I fought the law and the law won.
The Story: One of my best friends had a girlfriend back in 1996 (he has since then married this other girl), and I was with her and him and his brother (who was 12). And my friend Zack knew almost all oldies and I asked him if he had ever heard this song, and his then girlfriend screeched 'What did you say??' 'Was it I f***ed the wall and the wall won??'.....lol!!! That was funny all right. Anyway I never heard of anyone doing anything sexual to a wall, and even if they did of course the wall would win. - Submitted by: Preston Dunn
I fought the law and the law one.
I fought the law and the law won.
The Story: I corrected this lyric from someone else. If you are that someone, you aren't alone. I once thought it was 'one' and not 'won' too! BTW, 'One' is a homonym of 'won'. - Submitted by: Jeffrey Hope

I fought the law, and the law won.
The Story: A friend of mine crashed a car into a wall, with major damage to the car and my friend but relatively minor damage to the wall. Correspondingly, these misheard lyrics. - Submitted by: David Dana-Bashian
