Misheard Song Lyrics -> Stories -> Band Aid

Misheard lyrics (also called mondegreens) occur when people misunderstand the lyrics in a song. These are NOT intentional rephrasing of lyrics, which is called parody. For more information about the misheard lyrics available on this site, please read our FAQ.

This page contains a list of the songs that have stories about their misheard lyrics submitted.

Song names are sorted by first letter, excluding A and The. This is sorted by song title only, not by song title and performer. So if two different performers preformed the same song, you'll see misheard lyrics for both on the same page (provided the song title was spelt the same both times, and misheard lyrics have been submitted for both!).

Band Aid's, "Do They Know It's Christmas?"
The Misheard Lyrics:
And in our world of plenty
We can spread a smile at George.
The Real Lyrics:
And in our world of plenty
We can spread a smile of joy.
The Story: When the original Band Aid record came out, I was quite young. I thought that, when Boy George sung those lines, that he was either singing about himself or George Michael, who sung the next (line). I didn't actually realize what the song was about until a few years after that. - Submitted by: Dave
Band Aid's, "Do They Know It's Christmas?"
The Misheard Lyrics:
Feed the Welsh.
The Real Lyrics:
Feed the World.
The Story: This actually came from Word magazine's adaption of Midge Ure's autobiography. When making the record, I think it was Rick Parfitt of Status Quo who asked 'Why are we wanting to feed the Welsh'? - Submitted by: pickle*
Band Aid's, "Do They Know It's Christmas?"
The Misheard Lyrics:
Fever, woo-ah!
The Real Lyrics:
Feed the World!
The Story: It wasn't actually me that misheard this one, it was a friend of mine. Every Christmas, she used to enthusiastically sing along with the wrong words. I suppose a song about famine might have a reference to fever?!! - Submitted by: mhoraig Green
Band Aid's, "Do They Know It's Christmas?"
The Misheard Lyrics:
Peter Whirl
The Real Lyrics:
Feed the world.
The Story: Apparently, I thought this song was about a man named Peter Whirl, who didn't know it was Christmas. I was only young. [Ed.'s note: And probably didn't know there were children starving in Ethiopia, which was why this record was made.] - Submitted by: Jenny
Band Aid's, "Do They Know It's Christmas?"
The Misheard Lyrics:
The greatest gift they'll get this year is rice.
The Real Lyrics:
The greatest gift they'll get this year is life.
The Story: This mistake wasn't made by me, but by my supervisor at work, who'd thought the 'rice' lyric was right for nearly 20 years. It was discovered playing a Christmas tape in the office where she was singing along at the top of her voice. It made everyone stop and look at her. She has not been allowed to forget it since! - Submitted by: Mikael
