The 90s were a somewhat vampiric ten years,what with the aftershocks of AIDS,political correctness gone totally insane,a whole new wierd vocabulary of slang terms among the young,the men/women relationship turned upside down,then inside out,the threat of mad cow disease,the usually unstable world scene and other unpleasantness.Yeah,the 90s sucked-until blood was drawn.Don't ask me guys what went wrong here,but all would agree that some kind of Pandora's box bust open heralding one mean mother of a confusing,screwed up and depressing decade,epitomised by it's nonsensical numbers.Numbers like The only way is up.I believe this exercise in the idiotic wayed in at number one in the pop charts for five weeks in a row.It tells the unhappy tale of a couple about to be slung out into the middle of the street because they can't pay their way.I say unhappy,but they seem singularly unconcerned,almost to the point of total stupidity.[But if we should be evicted from the home,the only way is up] With a statement like that one might be forgiven for thinking that the home referred to here is some kind of mental home.She doesn't even know how they're going to eat,but since she has that guy's love,that's all that matters.[I wanna thank you for loving me this way she tells him.That guy sounds even screwier than her.]They almost seem to be relishing the prospect of living like stray dogs in the street-We'll just move somewhere else and still carry on.She says things might get a little tough-A little tough?-Lady are you two TOTALLY over the edge?-She's hopeful of a brighter day-Sounds like a high hope to me,and those high hopes sure got a heck of a long way to fall.[My own personal saying about hope is that it can travel far and then smash into a brick wall,and I speak from experience guys.] Mind you,the two balloon heads in evidence here would probably take that proverbial brick wall in their stride-Could there just possibly be something to be said for such a naive outlook?-Yeah-Naivety to the point of total stupidity like I said earlier.The only way is up?Sure.Up to the dizziest heights of the lamebrained.I can't conclude this piece without reference to that demented car horn blast which is heard now and then throughout the number-That is precisely what it sounds like.Perhaps it's illustrating the number of times these two blockheads will nearly get run over in their aimless wandering around the streets.
