Story about this misheard lyric by: Luca Grella

My friends and I sat with our ears glued to the phonograph for hours, playing this .45 over and over, until we figured out what we were sure were the lyrics-- a tale of lost love in the French underground resistance (which we believed to be literally 'underground') during World War II. It also involved a troupe of circus midgets ('though they're so small...'). Finally, I wrote away to the record company and they sent the actual lyrics, and boy were we disappointed. [Ed.'s note: My apologies, but I had to remove some of Luca's other lyrics because they were during different parts of the song. I would suggest filing separate entries next time.]

Upbeat Songs With Depressing Lyrics:

"Walk Away Renee"
The Lyrics:
Just walk away, Renee. You won't see me follow you back home. Now as the rain beats down upon my weary eyes, for me it cries.
Why:
This is a song about someone breaking up with someone. And this song was covered by the Four Tops which is more upbeat than the Left Banke version, but it still has the sorrowful lyrics.
