Judy Collins', "Brother, Can You Spare A Dime?"
The Lyrics:
Once I built a railroad, made it run
Made it race against time
Once I built a railroad, now it's done
Brother, can you spare a dime?
Why:
This is a well known song about unwarranted desperation during the Great Depression, but Ms. Collins treats this song with an upbeat Bossa Nova rhythm, that seems inappropriate

Judy Collins', "So Early, Early in the Spring"
The Lyrics:
If the girl is married, then I must go
I swear I'll stay on land no more
I'll sail the seas 'til the day I die
Why:
This song, despite its beautiful, cheery tone is one of the saddest I know, being about a young sailor whose lover betrays him while he is at sea.

Judy Collins', "Soth Sides Now"
The Lyrics:
I looked at clouds from both sides now,
from up and down, and still somehow,
It's clouds illusion I recall.
I really don't know clouds at all.
Why:
Don't let the harpsichord fool you, this song written by Joni Mitchell (who made a more somber version) could many someone cry.
