We had this gig [in Jacksonville, Florida in 1964], and it was [supposed to be] segregated. And that was really hard to understand. I mean, most of our heroes are African American musicians and singers, so we just didn’t understand it. And we said, “Well, we’re not going” and I think so there wouldn’t be a traffic hold-up in the town, they said, okay, you can play it [integrated].
