I actually met and spoke with Fred Phelps on several occasions back in the 1980's. He seemed like just an ordinary right-wing kook, just like most of my friends. The gay bashing came somewhat later. I posted my own tribute the day after his death. Last week I was in Topeka and drove past the Phelps compound. There is a house belonging to a gay organization right across the street. The siding is painted in bright rainbow colors. My tribute was based on Elton John's "Candle in the Wind". You, too have chosen a most appropriate original song to parody. Well done.
But what are your true feelings toward Fred Phelps, Susanna? ;-D
Good riddance to him indeed although the fact that WBC are still out there shows that its not over.
The Westboro clan are experienced marathon runners, owing to Fred Phelps enthusiasm for jogging and physical fitness. This skill came in handy last week in Oklahoma when a group of rednecks started to push their way through a police line and try to assault the Phelpsites.
