The Lyrics

Fred Phelps (1929-2014) is kaputt. Time to hoist the Blue Cross Flag. Nemo nos impune lacessit.
Once there was a hateful Fred
In the lovely state KS
And a hateful old, hateful old, hateful old Fred that never ever was
He spewed the folks in Eagleland
With hate and bile and dread
'Til one fine day in Kansas
He ate his final bread
And the coroner pronounced him dead
And through the world the joyous news went running
The joyous news that the wicked old Fred
Was finally done in

Ding-dong! The Fred is dead.

' Which old Fred?
' Well, uh,.. the Phelpsie Fred!
' Oh.

Ding-dong! The Bilious Fred is dead.
Oh yeah, happy day
Wake up you sleepy head,
Rub your eyes, and get out of that bed.
Wake up, the Hateful Fred is dead.

He's gone where the bad folks go,
Below, below, below. Yo-ho
Let's open up and sing and ring those bells out.
Sing the news out.

Ding-dong, the merry-oh, sing it high, sing it low.
Let them know the Foul-Mouth Fred is dead!
Why everyone's glad,
He was addict of hate
He kicked his bucket and had with Grim Reaper a date
Let 'em know the evil old Fred is dead!

I actually met and spoke with Fred Phelps on several occasions back in the 1980's. He seemed like just an ordinary right-wing kook, just like most of my friends. The gay bashing came somewhat later. I posted my own tribute the day after his death. Last week I was in Topeka and drove past the Phelps compound. There is a house belonging to a gay organization right across the street. The siding is painted in bright rainbow colors. My tribute was based on Elton John's "Candle in the Wind". You, too have chosen a most appropriate original song to parody. Well done.

Good riddance to him indeed although the fact that WBC are still out there shows that its not over.

The Westboro clan are experienced marathon runners, owing to Fred Phelps enthusiasm for jogging and physical fitness. This skill came in handy last week in Oklahoma when a group of rednecks started to push their way through a police line and try to assault the Phelpsites.
