Original Performer:

Parody Song Title:

"I Voted For Malcolm"

Parody Written by:

Phil Alexander

The Lyrics

I don't do too many of these "amiright" parodies, but I've been wanting to do one on this OS for ages and couldn't resist once the idea struck... with judicious use of ambiguous names, I've managed to fit in abour 50 authors from only 30-something names :-)
I love these songs, I love this site
Can I be wrong at amiright?
Aspiring writers should take note:
Whatever we see, we vote!

I voted for Malcolm
He voted for Jim
We all agree that Johnny D
Must have voted for him

Now, he voted for Kristof
Who voted for JB
And everybody knows that JB
Voted for me

Royce voted for Alvin
He voted for Guy
Who voted for the Blessranger
No one has figured out why

Spaff voted the Prez-man
Who cannot be ignored
He got votes from Merry and Pippin
Haha, lucky ol' Claude

Bob voted for Martha
And Jeff, Luke, Chris and Tim
They all got fives from Arwen
Who, well, votes for everything

She then voted for Ethan
Who passed it on to Rick
Who voted Michaelopedia
Leo and Dee got one in quick

Ah, but I voted for Malcolm
And Paul and Airfarcetwo
And Charlie and MooRocca and Bobby and Emi
And 2nz4u

And Peter, Ag and STG
And Florio and lebeiW,
And if you start posting songs
Then I might...(Mind you, I said "might")...
Give you one too!

Is that last stanza saying you'll vote ones?? hee hee
John Barry - October 18, 2005 - Report this comment
Clever and jaunty.

Great job, Philbo, and the OS is hilarious, too --- my wife and I attended a performance of "Tomfoolery" at Acme Theatre ( acmetheater.com ) in Maynard, Massachusetts, earlier this year --- and the OS was performed as part of the show.

Nicely done, Phil. Where do you come up with these brilliant ideas? 555
AFW - October 18, 2005 - Report this comment
Not familiar with the other song, but reads well and many clever lines...plus, the fact that you promoted me to Airfarcetwo...from airfarcewon...deserves fives
Phil Alexander - October 18, 2005 - Report this comment
Sorry AFT, er AFW, but I "one" didn't rhyme ;-) If you don't know the OS, I'd strongly recommend it - in fact, if you've the odd $44.99 spare, I'd very much recommend buying "The Remains Of" (click the Amazon link on the right). Comic songwriting doesn't get much better.
JD - you mean you've seen TL play live? I'm inordinately jealous...
Tim - no, of course not - but I'll only give one vote: and I couldn't resist the double entendre (of course)
JB - Thank you for validating my 11th and 12th lines ;-)
Rick - listening to the rhythms of words, I guess: I think this one might have been some Tory saying "I'm voting for Davis", but I didn't want to do another Tom Lehrer parody about the Tory leadership contest (having done "Who's Next" already), so I made it an amirighter one instead.

No, Tom Lehrer himself was not there --- "Tomfoolery" is a musical comedy done in the style and format of the old "Laugh-In" comedy show from American TV of the late 1960's --- and all of the songs in the show are Tom Lehrer's songs!

I'm sure you meant me and not that OTHER Rick. (wink wink) I briefly met Tom Lehrer. He taught for many years at Santa Cruz University. I sat in one of his classes and listened to that familiar voice discuss political science. Afterwards, I told him I wrote songs like him, only on a six-string piano. He didn't even blink, and showed no interest in discussing his music, or that there was anything pending in the future. A year later, Tomfoolery came out.

The Acme Theater production of "Tomfoolery" that my wife and I saw was done like an episode of "Laugh-In", right down to the psychedelic-colored wall-full-of-doors & the old lady & dirty old man on the park-bench-sketch (that old Laugh-In sketch was used as the vehicle for "Poisoning Pigeons In The Park"). I don't know if "Tomfoolery" was written specifically to be done as a take-off on "Laugh-In", but that's how Acme Theater chose to do it --- and it worked!

Good catch, dropping all them names in such a small area. I never thought my name would end up rhyming with Mr. Two, so good call. And what JB said.
Phil Alexander - October 18, 2005 - Report this comment
Yeah, Rick... of course I did ;-) Well, I originally had "Rick [C/D]" in the JB slot, until I changed tack and tried to get as many ambiguous names in as possible (hence Tim, Jim, Alvin, etc)... re your encounter with the man himself, does it make you wonder how many others have suggested that they sing similar songs accompanied by a six-string piano? IMO, it's a good line to use, given the Folk Song Army intro
2nz - I was having problems getting your name to rhyme with anything (being a Brit and constitutionally incapable of rhyming 'z' with 'bee'), so I mixed it with 2LD4U to try and further increase the scope :)
JD - sounds kinda fun, if not quite the real thing..

I love Love LOVE it, Mr. Alexander...=) I don't even know the OS, and I love it. I am also pleased with the folks you chose me to give votes to...I mean, how embarrassing would it have been if you'd suggested that I'd voted for Stuart or something? ; )

Great work!!!

don't worry Arwen, we newbies know our place down the pecking order - I do KTOS Phil, because it was used in Oz for a potato crisp commercial - and a difficult one to pace - nice job - 555

Probably some sort of name-dropping record here, though I guess anyone taking on that song whatever it was that Spaff did "Anyone but Bush" to last year could actually beat it. *Hint*, *Wink*, *Hint*.
2nz - October 19, 2005 - Report this comment
in hindsight, I really would rather have taken a different name as an author here. '2nz' is feels too sterile and also the pronunciation is a bit misleading. My intention was to take a name of 'toons' and spell it differently (as in Spaff's nickname for me: "Looney 2nz"). I though it was clever and original at the time. But many people pronounce it '2-N-Z' and some even take it a step further and ask if I'm from New Zealand. Too late to change now, though. ;c)
Phil Alexander - October 19, 2005 - Report this comment
Ah... to rhyme with "Toonz" If I'd known that, I'd have made it Airfarce2nz instead ;-) It is fairly clever and original.. but way too clever for an oldie like me, I'm afraid.
Peter Andersson - October 20, 2005 - Report this comment
2nz: So it's supposed to be "toons" then? I remember seeing Spaffs nick for you, but personally I've been leaning towards guessing it should be pronounced "seconds" (or maybe "secon'z"), as in here comes another round. :-)
