Parody Song Title:

"When You've Spent All Our Pay"

Parody Written by:

Phil Alexander

The Lyrics

Or.. on the benefits of sound financial planning
Since we still have money left, dear
Let's spend it while we may.
For we'll soon be bereft, dear
When we've spent all our pay

I don't mean spend it all right now
No that was just a joke
What you thought I meant it?
And you've been, gone and spent it?
Now it's gone, we're stony broke

All our liabilities
To banks and utilities
Are at their extrimities
Of both our abilities
You're saying how brill it is
With no responsibilities
But your voice- oh how shrill it is
And over-the-hill it is
The impossibilities
Of repayabilities
When what we have is nil, it is
Unlikely but still it is
Our house - oh how chill it is
'Cause we can't pay the bill, it is
To be left in our will, it is
But we can't die until it is

Repaid, and that in full, dear
They won't take this instead
It's time to cut the bull, dear
And get out of the red

From now on, spend nothing at all
Well at least you can but try
No? Ignore all my ravings
And forget about savings
Good grief! Good luck! Good buy!

Brilliant, Phil. Everyone on this site should study the great Tom Lehrer. If you have his book "Tomfoolery", you'll find that he wrote an additional middle verse to this.

Thanks, Rick - I have his songbook "Too many songs by Tom Lehrer" which lists the alternative words - and I would also recommend to anyone reading this that they have a long look at the way Tom Lehrer forms his songs, and uses words to such exquisite effect. IMO, he is the best comic lyricist, ever.

That is the book I meant. That's where I got the music for the files I sent you and Martha. "Tomfoolery" was the musical based on those songs.

Must admit my copy is kind of falling apart now... can't remember when I got it, but it was a loooooong time ago. Sigh.
