The Lyrics

In 1940 as a private venture the Ductile Steel Co. of Short Heath, Staffordshire submitted an independeent design for a rapid manufacture light ,303 MG. It had a Lewis action with a Bren mag mounted UNDER the gun and a return spring in a steel tube. In firing trials the gunner was struck on the cheeck by the return spring operation and even with a bipod ground clearance of the mag was .5 in!!! So, it was difficult to use as an Army weapon. Despite these flaws the MG was picked up by the Navy and used for coastal defense ships in a twin AA mount where the gunner and mag problems were solved. It was in light action from '42-44 and then declared obsolete. Not many pics survive of the gun and less in action... but it was obtained for low-cost and performed effective enough to warrant limited production. There are no figures for production and very little data on the MG. Infantry mags held 20 rds but the Navy mags were drum-types and featured armored shields.
