The Lyrics
The Russian 1871 Novgorad was a coastal ironclad that used a circular hull and took it to the extreme. On the positive side it had a circular 9" armor belt, formidible armament of 2x 11" cannons, 2x 4 pdrs, and 2x 37mm guns. But it took 8 boilers to run 6 engines driving 6 separate shafts all to the rear with a small rudder crammed in the middle. The two smoke stacks impeded the cannons field of fire and when they did fire it caused the ship to rotate out of control! Even in calm seas the vessel tended to pitch violently and after testing two of them, the project was wisely abandoned in favor of more conventional ships.
