The Lyrics

While the Italians technically invented the SMG in WW1 as the Villar-Perosa meant for aircraft, the first TRUE SMG was the Bergmann MP-18 that were issued to German Sturmtruppen (Stormtroopers) in 1918 as trench sweepers. Then came the MP-28 interwar for the Polizei and then MP-38/40 for WW2 mistaken as "Schmeisser" when actually designed by Vollmer! Postwar, Walther followed up with the Polizei MPK and MPL SMGs and then came the HKs- the outstanding MP-5 regarded as the best SMG in the world with over 50+ configurations!!! But wait... the Germans have now moved into the PDW (Personal Defense Weapon) category with the small but highly effective HK MP-7 popular with SFs and HRUs as well as special combat troops. The Luftwaffe also uses them with their pilots for special missions. After the MP-5 the most popular SMGs are the Beretta M-12 and the Israeli Uzi.
Submachine guns you used
over time

MP-18 was the first true (SMG)
For trench fightin’
Strumtruppen likin’

[It struck like lightnin’]

MP-40 bandit
Shot 500 rounds (per minute)
It proved to be deadly
Used by German troops on battlegrounds

Submachine guns you used
over time
Worked fine

Walthers too
Walthers too
Walthers too
The MPK and L
HK appears
MP-5 succeeds
MP-7 now sells

[SFs and HRUs use well]

Legacy
Submachine guns you used
over time
(Best in the world from Germany)

Had a Reising Model 60 semiautomatic carbine once. Sold it before I learned just how rare the thing was. Never did shoot very well. Had to replace the firing pin. Magazines didn't feed either. But it would be worth about 4 times what I got for it.

During WW2 the best SMGs were Soviet b/c like the postwar AK series were extremely reliable under all circumstances and conditions. Most people think it was the PPSh-41 that ruled, but it was actually the latter PPS-43 that was superior. The German MP-38/40s were excellent, but overly complex. And of course, you will have the Finns swear on the Suomi against the Soviets and also the Aussies with the Owen, British with the Sten, Italians with the M-38, and US with the Thompson. The Japanese had no reliable SMGs- the Type 100 a total POS! The master of SMGs, Timothy J. Mullin, actually chose the Owen as the best SMG of all time! I think he's out of his freakin' mind!!! I have fired a range of SMGs and my personal favorite was the Sterling. The MP-5 series is awesome and the MP-7 is ultra-compact (technically a PDW) but you like what you like :)

Also, the problem with the Reising M50/55 SMGs during WW2 was the bad 12 or 20 shot mags, the odd slot action lever that took a finger to pull, and the parts were not interchangable. Marines that put them in the cleaning vats and picked up the wrong parts from other weapons found that the Reising would not work with them. In fact the SMG was so unreliable in the jungles that at Guadalcanal they dumped them into a river. Some were also sold to the USSR through a British mediator- the Reds hated the weapon and discarded it also. I personally would have taken a Marlin UD-42 instead. German General Krebs was captured on Crete with commandos using the UD-42. The M50 SMGs were sent back home to police and security services and worked OK for them... but not under military combat conditions!
