The Junkers Ju-287 jet bomber project started in 1942 as an experiment in areodynamics. The first aircraft was cobbled together from various components: the fuselage from a He-177 bomber, nose wheels off captured B-24s, main wheels from a Ju-352 transport, and rear tail unit from a Ju-188. The V1 was fitted with 4x Jumo 004 jet engines @1980 lb st each and it flew in August 1944 with 17 successful flights. The V2 was under construction as was the new 6-engine V3. Both were captured by the Russians and transported back to the USSR with Junkers team and pilots. The other version, the Ju-287S with projected 2x 6390 lb st Jumo 012s was never built. The V2 flew in October 1946 and the V3 was used by TsAGI for static loading tests. A new Junkers version, the EF-131V1 flew in 1947 with a German pilot and was handed over to Russian teams for evaluation. But b/c the FSW were controversial and Junkers had more large bomber designs, the project was cancelled in late 1947. The original German plan was to use the V3 with 4x BMW 018 jet engines of 7700 lb st each... but the engine was not service ready, neither was the He S 011. So Junkers designed cluster nacelles that held 3x 1760 lb st BMW 003 jet engines per wing. This is what the Russians used. Junkers developed the lighter twin-engine EF-140 with FSW but this too was cancelled. Postwar, West Germany built the light FSW HFB-320 Hansa Jet used by the Luftwaffe as VIP transport.
