One of my other favorite ST TNG episodes (517) is "Outcast" where the Enterprise meets a humonid race called the J'naii that are androgynous. They team up for a rescue mission of a shuttle lost in null space. Soren is paired with Riker and she gets injured in the first attempt. Being one of the J'naii that has gender identification as female, she starts to ask the Enterprise crew about male-female relations and sexuality. This is viewed as primitive perversion on her world and so has to keep it a secret. But eventually she kisses Riker and tells him that she is attracted to him. They fall in love which is forbidden and Riker lies to keep the J'naii spies from knowing the truth. But Soren is found-out and faces punishment with psychological treatment. Riker lies to place blame on himself, but it doesn't work. After that fails, he seeks to disobey orders and mount a rescue mission, but Picard refuses under the Prime Directive. So Riker enlists the help of Worf, knowing his career would be over. When they arrive, Soren had already willingly received treatment over her "confusion" and is accepted back into society. Riker is devastated but she tells him that everytthing is well and that she is "sorry". An odd episode but the theme is LGBT rights and interesting...
