This comes from one of my favorite ST TNG episodes (306). In this episode, the USS Enterprise discovers a derelict centuries-old alien battlecruiser and becomes trapped with it. The cruiser is Promellian and had become ensnared by Menthar Aceton Assimilators (binds) that drain a ship's energy and redirect it back as a radiation weapon. Having befallen the same fate as the cruiser Geordi and Picard must figure out how to defeat the binds before the ship loses shields and all die from radiation. Geordi needs help, so he goes to the Holodeck to ask assistance from a Sim of Dr. Leah Brahms who helped design the Enterprise. This takes ST beyond the OS and Mr. Scott's love of the ship as Geordi actually falls in love with the Sim of Leah! She helps with calculations that allow Picard to shut down all main power systems and engines and use mere thrusters to navigate an asteroid field and use gravity as a sling-shot to defeat the binds. It works, as usual, and Picard orders both the Promellian cruiser and Menthar devices destroyed for good. All-around a great episode :)
