The Lyrics
The XP-56 was Northrop's entry in an early-war informal competion along with the XP-54 and XP-55. It was based on a bullet-shaped fuselage with a 2000 hp Double Wasp rear pusher engine and a small dorsal fin. Northrop researched flying wings during WW2 and produced the P-61 nightfighter. So it seemed rational to try for a tailless pusher in a quest for high speed. Although the XP-56 could attain 465 mph theoretically on full-power and would have been armed with 2x 20mm cannons and 4x .50 cals as armament... it was hazardous to fly. It had severe problems with instability at all speeds, bad handling, and could not seem to reach full power very well. It only could reach barely over 400 mph. Deemed too impractical and dangerous, the Black Bullet was shut-down and cancelled in 1944.
