The Lyrics
In the early 1940s there was an informal design competition between Consolidated-Vultee, Curtiss, and Norhrop for unorthodox fighters. CV produced the XP-54 "Swoose Goose", Curtiss had the XP-55 Ascender, and Northrop the XP-56 Black Bullet. But the worst IMHO was the XP-55. One flew on July 19, 1943 but crashed months later. Two others were flown in 1944 but suffered from bad handling at several speeds, stall problems, inadequate engine power, and over-heating for the rear pusher. It had a slow speed of 390 mph and 4x .50 cals in the nose... but at a time when the best models of the P-38, P-47, and P-51 were coming around for escort duties and attack. It stood no chance as a weird canard-pusher and was cancelled. Amazingly, Japan's replacement for the Zero and other fighters (Kyushu JW7 Shinden) was the best and only canard-pusher that had vast potential with a speed of 466 mph and 4x 30mm cannons. It just missed combat... compare below...
