The Lyrics

The Northrop P-61 Black Widow was the largest and heaviest night fighter of WW2 with armament the heaviest among Allied night fighters (the German He-219 outgunned it). It first flew in May 1942 with many mock parts b/c it took time to develop the SCR-720 nose radar and the dorsal barbette with 4x .50 MGs. This caused the twin-boom plane to be delayed until 1944 when it was used in Europe (killing German a/c and also 9 V-1 flying bombs). But it excelled in the PTO against the Japanese and scored many kills. Over 700 of them were built and 3 aces were made, the P-61 able to fight smaller interceptors with its agility and heavy armament. It was powered by 2x 2000 hp P&W Double Wasp engines. Its Japanese rival was the Kawasaki Ki-45 Toryu (Allied Codename NICK) which had good performace and armament but lacked a good radar set...

A very distinctive looking plane, most were painted black for night fighting. Weren't some of these used for fighting forest fires after the war?

When I was young, I used to buy models and aircraft magazines (Wings & Airpower, later Japanese and Euro-RAIDS). I liked the P-61 a lot, but favored the He-219 Uhu as ultimate night fighter. The Me Bf 110 was a loser in the Battle of Britain, but turned into a decent night fighter with exhaust dampeners, oblique cannon. and Spanner IR equipment! One He-219 tested a BMW 003 jet engine slung underbelly and had to fight several times. Here is a artist pic of it (the only real pic found is of the slung engine wind tunnel testing, not the entire aircraft): http://tanks45.tripod.com/Jets45/Histories/He219/He219_1.jpg
