The Lyrics

The need for German night fighting against the Allies led to IR development on a wide scale. Devices were used at first for German AFVs- mainly the Panther tank and also for the SdKfz 251 as the Uhu (Owl) system. Then, small arms started to receive them for the MP-44/STG-44, MP-40, and MG-34s and 42s. The ZG-1229 Vampir (Vampire) was a rather large unit assembly mated to a STG-44 rifle most of the time and consisted of a heavy 30 lb wooden cased battery pack along with another battery pack in a German gas mask container carried by a Traggestell 39 (pack frame 1939). It featured a high mounted night light with image converter which operated in the high IR spectrum and was not a thermal imager. However, the Nachtjaegeren that carrier these held an advantage at night and killed many starting in Feb 1945. The US developed IR in the Pacific but the technology was nowhere near the German levels in scale and in tech. Captured Vampirs were examined and copied postwar until the size of IR sights could be drasticlaly reduced. Germans also used IR with nightfighters, particularly the Do-17 KAUZ and Bf 110. See last pic below...

Wow! That looks like a lot of equipment to carry for nightvision!

A remarkable weapon for the time.

The rifle or the scope or both??? The STG-44 was actually hidden under the MP-44 SMG designation b/c Hitler forbid further development. But once it was completed and presented Hitler named it the Sturmgewehr or "assault rifle" which has stuck ever since! The STG-44 was amazing for the time and was fitted with several exotic devices. One was the bent-barrel attachment for firing around corners long before the Israeli Cornershot Gun and also the Vampir ZG-1229 for night fighting. Some tested suppressors. A great weapon, it was to be replaced by either the STG-45 or a bullpup in Oct 1945.
