The Lyrics

The Savoia-Marchetti designed SM.93 was an unusual wooden dive-bomber with a prone pilot and aft-facing gunner. The aircraft was initially Italian, but then adapted by the Germans with a DB 605A engine of 1475 hp with supercharger and a 20mm MG-151/20 firing through the nose. The Italian armamaent was 3x 12.7mm MGs mounted 2 in the wings and 1 for the rear gunner. It could carry over 1600 lbs of bombs for dive-bombing and hit speeds of 560 mph during testing. But the war situation became dire and the sole prototype was grounded after late March 1944 by order of the German Control Commission. It flew 16 flights and aroiund 7 hrs. It had a lot of potential but there simply was no need for this type of a/c by 1944 with the Germans who were about to start the V-bombing campaign with Buzzbombs and rockets, introduce jet aircraft into combat, and who needed more fighters to combat the USAAF Daylight Bombing Campaign. A fast wooden dive-bomber was of no real use...
SM.93 improved
DB 605

Dive bomber built mainly of wood
Prone flyin’
High speed divin’

Prone pilot could withstand it
Carryin’ (bomb) 1600 lbs
A cannon and two MGs deadly
High speed made it hard to shoot down

SM.93 improved
DB 605
Fast dive

It soon flew
It soon flew
It soon flew
560 mph
It didn’t matter
No combat urgency
Situation was dire

Was no need

Am confused about the entire Italian-German connection with late planes. Why exactly did the Germans want the Italian birds when they had their own best???
