The Lyrics

This was a Finnish hybrid Bf 109G created for use with harsh Finnish airfields and using non-strategic materials like wood for construction. The Finn pilots (some of the best in the world at that time) HATED the German Bf 109G-6 with its tight, cramped cockpit with lack of rear vision and the main gear. The Germans would come in and do 2-point landings and drop the tail while the Finns insisted on 3-point landings at all times. So at VL they redesigned the G-6 with a new cockpit, stretched fuselage, redesigned tail and wings with inward-retracting gear. German engine and armament would stay the same but with substitute 12.7mm LKK/42 MGs instead of the other two cannon and provision for two small bombs to be carried on the wings. Due to construction priorities the Pyorremyrski (Whirlwind) was delayed repeatedly and then stopped with the Finn-Soviet Armistice, but amazingly revived in Jan 1945. A DB 605 engine was installed and the plane finally flew postwar in Nov 1945. It flew for just 30 hrs and was cancelled as the Finn AF by agreement could not build new military a/c for a time. So they continued on with stocks of German Bf 109G-6s. The hybrid now sits in a Finnish museum as an oddball construction- see below!
For 30 hours it flew
Finn 109

Ilmavoimat G-6 to improve
No denyin’
New aircraft flyin’

The Finns couldn’t stand it
The harsh landing grounds
Make the 109 better
VL tried to redesign it all around

For 30 hours it flew
Finn 109
Refined

Work resumed
Work resumed
Work resumed
By ‘45 the “Whirlwind”
Took to the air
Ended-up using
Aircraft from Germans

Was neat
For 30 hours it flew
Finn 109
(but restricted in postwar defeat)

Looks like a bastardized 109! Were the Finns really any good as pilots???

Second only to the German Experten, better than Soviets, Japanese, British, Italian, and American...
