The Lyrics
The joint US/German Rockwell/MBB X-31 (aka EFM) was a research aircraft meant for super-agility through the combined use of thrust-vectoring and an awesome graphite-epoxy delta wing that allowed for a high AOA (Angle of Attack) of 70 degrees (double that of the MiG-29 and almost 3 times more than the F-16). The aircraft was a small target and could slow in the air to 28 mph IAS (Indicated AirSpeed), also turning in a very tight 330 ft!!! It easily beat all of the US fighters and even the aquired Russian MiG-29s! The data collected from this aircraft was to be put to use in both US and German/European programs. But only Europe developed the canard/delta configuration and w/o thrust-vectoring so far. The US opted for the semi-stealthy F-22 and also no thrust-vectoring. The canard-delta MiG-39 has been shelved as well...

I once saw a propeller driven plane that could fly that slow and turn in a very short radius, but the idea of a jet interceptor with that capability is almost unbelievable.
As much as I admire the X-31 in recent Russian airshows the Su-27 family of fighters can perform maneuvers that no other a/c in the world can. One jet climbed at almost 90o with ZERO IAS. Yes, it probably was traveling at just under 5 mph and not registering but that is massive tonnage to hang in the air. Sukhois can also do barrel rolls and other incredible things due to the TsAgi wings. Su-47 Berkut FSW is another awesome Russian machine and now they have the export T-50.
