"German AS Gun, HUGE!!!"

Parody Written by:

The Lyrics

"Once the basic recoilless principle had been proved, work also began on a monster gun in response to a request from the Luftministerium for an anti-ship weapon capable of firing a 1,400lb. armour-piercing shell to penetrate battleship deck armour. The object was to use this to bombard the British fleet as it lay at anchor in Scapa Flow. The result of this was Gerat 104 ('Equipment 104'), a 35cm calibre gun slung beneath an aircraft and retracted hydraulically during flight. With a weapon of this size, a jet efflux would doubtless have wrecked the carrying aircraft completely, so the Rheinmetall engineers went back to the Davis' idea and produced a counter-shot weapon. Instead of using a second barrel and a special counter-shot, the same result was achieved by making the cartridge case with a heavy steel casing which weighed 1,400lbs, the same as the armour-piercing shell. As the cartridge fired the shell forwards, so it fired the cartridge case backwards, achieving the necessary balance and recoillessness. Obviously, reloading a 1,400lb. shell plus a cartridge of equal weight while in flight was out of the question, so the Gerat 104 was strictly a one-shot weapon. But before flight trials could take place, war broke out, and since it was thought that other things were more important, further development of the Gerat 104 was stopped." ~ Ian Hogg
German AS gun, HUGE!!!
Waste of time

This counter-shot cannon was huge
Sense defyin’
Dornier flyin’

The aircraft wouldn’t stand it
1400 lb round
Counter-shot remedy
Built to take enemy battleships down

German AS gun, HUGE!!!
Waste of time
In ‘39

It was huge
It was huge
It was huge
The mighty Munchausen
365mm
One-shot only
It was not chosen

Lunacy!
German AS gun, HUGE!!!
Waste of time

Rob - At Aberdeen Proving Grounds, i saw the famed German railroad gun...I believe it was named Leopold. Am I right that it was the metric equivalent of a 12" gun? ;D

You are thinking of the famous Krupp 28cm K5(E) "Anzio Annie" but the displayed gun is a combination of two K5s- "Anzio Annie" and "Anzio Express" (aka Robert und Leopold). They were 11.1" guns that fired a 560 lb shell to a range of 31 miles. 8 guns were built and two were bored out to 31cm to fire Peenemunde Arrow shells. Others fired rocket projectiles K5Vz. Excellent weapon but not so big as the ultimate 80cm Gustav and Dora guns!!!

Love the 80cm even though they were of limited use. 3 weeks to assemble with 1000 men and weighed 3 million pounds!!! Shot a 4.73 ton projectile 29.20 miles!!! The German News Reels footage is spectacular!!!
