The Lyrics

Continuing in a series of recent British secret weapons of WW2, the PIAT (Projector Infantry Anti-Tank) was the British answer to the US Bazooka and German Panzerschreck and Panzerfaust weapons against tanks and obstacles. It was started in 1942 largely due to the failure of the Boys AT rifle to penetrate German armor. The Ord. Dept. again passed it over to MD1 and it went through several variations before becoming a portable spigot mortar shot horizontally. Even though 115,000 were manufactured from 1943-45, the PIAT was very troublesome for British infantry. It weighed 32 lbs by itself and required a 2-man team to load and fire. It was 3.3 ft long and fired a 5 lb spigot bomb to 100m to kill 4" of enemy armor. The coil spring needed 200 lbs to cock the weapon from a vertical position (exposed to enemy fire). If loaded in a trench the PIAT was almost uncockable and therefore useless. When cocked and armed, the recoil was sometimes insufficient to re-cock the weapon and firing it from a prone position was uncomfortable while the flimsy monopad was unstable. However, the British soldiered on with the weapon and some even made it to Korea!
PIAT weapon from ‘42
far from fine

Boys AT rifle to improve
Infantry dyin’
MD1 was tryin’

British couldn’t stand it
Panzers runnin’ around
Spigot mortar deadly
Just tough to load it on the ground

PIAT weapon from ‘42
far from fine
Short time

Hated you
Hated you
Hated you
Coil spring was flawed, and how!
Tough to prepare
200 lb pull need
(Re)load by recoil

Was scary
PIAT weapon from ‘42
far from fine
(troublesome for British infantry)

I hefted one of these that a friend used to own. Scary. I can imagine that spring getting loose while trying to set it and mangling the poor soldier who was stuck with trying to shoot it. I've also read that the bomb had a propellant charge which was ignited by a .303 blank. Sometimes the blank would come back on the reverse trajectory of the projectile and hit the operator. You can see a PIAT in action in the movie "A Bridge Too Far".

Eeeew! imagine what a mess that weapon would make, if it backfired while a solider was trying to fire it? :-o Awesome job on another SJH IPASOY parody! 555! :-)

I'm trying to do some British secret weapons of WW2... which is like Monty Python (takest thous this Holy Hand Grenade) mized with that funny Benny Hill music!!! I can't imagine wanting to fire that akward thing at all. The US improved its Bazooka while the Germans developed the Panzerfaust. The only ones with simething wilder and irresponsible were the Russians- but I won't give it away yet. Maybe I will write about it today... wonder if Patrick has any idea what I am talkign about???
