The Lyrics

Having grown-up in the '70s and early '80s I never forgot the moped craze that swept our area from '79 to mid-80s! One day nothing and then suddenly the streets were alive with the sound of Vespa moped engines. I was 15 in 1980 and decided on a bet from a friend to purchase a moped for riding fun. Most were Vespas with the girl-type design, but being German, I found the Austrian Stery-Daimler-Puch male-type more appealing, even though the thing had a paltry 1.5 hp engine and a top speed of only 30mph!!! But girls loved it and that was a good reason to buy! My brother Roger Arndt then took it over and worked on the engine so that we could attain 45 mph, 50 mph+ downhill!!! What a crazy fad. But soon the old Puch Magnum XK was stored in the shed out back for decades- forgotten until 2004 when my brother gave it to Gene Mathews who got it up and operating again after almost 2 decades!!! It was a blast from the past until Gene's brother Jordan wrecked it, and thus it now sits in the backyard of their home waiting to be restored to its former glory!!! Pic at the bottom. I can't believe I spent $1000 on that in 1980- crazy!!!
Moped craze of ‘80s grew
for a time

Vespa mopeds were on the move
I ain’t lyin’
Teens were buyin’

Young people just loved it
Mopeds zippin’ ‘round
Bought a Puch Magnum XK
I was crazy, put $1k down

Moped craze of ‘80s grew
for a time
Since ‘79

I rode you
I rode you
I rode you
1.5 hp, 30 mph!
And I didn’t care
How slow was the speed
Chics wanted rides-hours!

Insanity!
Moped craze of ‘80s grew
for a time
(got a motorcycle eventually)
I put a BMX pad over the crossbar, added turn signals, and carried the oil mix in the tail- the measuring cup for the 2-stroke engine was under the right side panel!!! http://creaturesoftheloin.com/images/redmagnum.jpg

It seem that even I can remember those Vespa moped vehicles in the mid 80's too, of course if it was 1985 I would only have been 12 or 13. Great parody about a classic bike! 555! :-)

Most people in America do not know that the Vespa scooter was invented by the chief engineer of Piaggion Aircraft- D'Ascanio, right after WW2!!! Vespa stands for Wasp! He designed Piaggo fighters like the P.119: http://rareaircraf1.greyfalcon.us/picturesd/it28.jpg In 1980, Vespa mopeds filled the streets, mopeds like this: http://photos-c.ak.fbcdn.net/photos-ak-snc1/v350/51/48/682625601/n682625601_4549058_7649.jpg

Do you remember the Vespa car? Slightly larger than the scooter, but not by much. I once watched a couple of high school kids pick one up and move it.
