The Lyrics

The is beyond a doubt one of the strangest craft ever built in two versions from R.E. Alekseev who built test models of this WIG (Soviet Ekranoplan) before attempting a manned version that held 3 and had a large TS-121 turbine mounted on the aft fuselage! The tandem wing WIG had performance problems with rough handling, wing positions, stability, narrow flight envelope, and poor turn radius. So a second model SM-2P was improved with a high T-tail, single rectangular wing, and turbojets in the tail with an air inlet at the base of the tailfin. It was damaged in a hangar fire while SM-1 crashed in 1962. Deemed impractical and costly, the strange WIGs were cancelled. But they remain some of the strangest creations ever...
Weird Soviet WIGs from ‘62
for water or snow clime

Strangest Ekranoplan that ever flew
TS-121 whinin’
SM-1 was flyin’

R.E. Alekseev planned it
Test models sound
SM-1 would be manned
Above water or just above ground

Weird Soviet WIGs from ‘62
for water or snow clime
Strange lines

They flew you
They flew you
They flew you
Made a twin with T-tail
Adjustments here and there
For handling and stability
Despite improvements- failed

Craft unlucky
Weird Soviet WIGs from ‘62
for water or snow clime
(impractical and ugly)

Fantastic looking machine, would like to see one up close. Turboprop or jet, that would be a monster. Couldn't "fly" but would of certainly outrun every other vessel on the water. Would like to see the Somali pirates take on this machine and lose.

Some day I will get around to writing about the German Lippisch WIGs. The Alekseev SM-1 and SM-2P are really bizarre but I too would like to have seen that operational. George Lucas couldn't have come up with a more bizarre design- at first I though this looked like a combo landspeeder/snow speeder!!!

I once saw a photo in an old German album of a propeller driven vehicle on skis. The cabin vaguely resembled a Junkers airplane of the 1920's or 30's, with a rear, pusher propeller. I've also seen photos of a small helicopter being carried on a Kriegsmarine vessel.

The Junkers could be any of their planes with skis for winter weather- even a Stuka tried them!!! Or it could be a captured Soviet Aerosan during WW2 and with German markings. The helo on the KM ship is the Fl-282 Kolibri (Humminbird). An odd vehicle is the German snow-screw vehicle...
