The Lyrics

The Republic XP-72 Superbolt was to be the 1945 replacement for the excellent P-47 Thunderbolt, but as fate would have it the war was winding to a close and German and Allied jet fighter development meant that having established air superiority over Germany regardless, that piston fighters were on their way out. Despite a performance of 490mph @ 25,000 ft, 5280 fpm climb, range of 1530 miles, and armed with either 6x .50 cals or 4x 37mm cannon... the XP-72 powered by a 3450 hp P&W R-4360 Wasp Major radial engine with 4-blade prop was going nowhere. Second prototype had 6 blades and another engine. The XP-72 was designed by the same team that had designed the Thunderbolt. Sad that it did not make it into combat along with the faster props of Britain and Germany like the Supermarine Spiteful Mk.XVI and the Do-335 Pfeil...
Superbolt XP-72
Kartveli design

One of the fastest fighters of WW2
Turbo-charger supplyin’
Fighter-bomber flyin’

USAAF P-47 replacement
Battlin’ air-to ground
100 initially ordered from Republic
Jet fighters were enough to shut it down

Superbolt XP-72
Kartveli design
3450 hp radial whine

Just two flew
Just two flew
Just two flew
In Feb and June 1944
To be armed with six .50 calibers
And with US air supremacy
The USAAF didn’t want more

No urgency

Must of had a problem with weight, 6 blades should be sufficient to carry a plane into the air, wherever it needs to go. Soaring high with three 5's once again! :-)

Would have been cool to see the P-72 go at it with the Japanese Shinden 466mph pusher: http://ww2total.com/WW2/Weapons/War-Planes/Fighter-Planes/Japanese/Kyushu/images/Shinden-02-px800.jpg

I think one of the auto makers is using a clip of this plane in one of their ads.

Patrick, sorry but no... the Dodge commercial you speak of features a HEMI engine like the first one installed in the Republic P-47H. That HEMI was the Chrysler IV-2220-1 of 2300 hp. It flew in July 1945 and then was halted. Originally slated for the Curtiss XP-60C of 1942, the engine was delayed and then Republic got it... http://www.aerofiles.com/repub-xp47h.jpg http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/9/97/Chrysler_IV-2220_%281%29.PNG
