The Lyrics

At the end of WW2, the Soviets captured several German designs for disc aircraft and kept them secret. Unlike the high-tech rocket craft assigned to OKB-1 and 2, the German discs and discoid motors were tested by separate VVS facilities and evaluated for development. They could not replicate the Schauberger Repulsin tech of discoid motors and so those were abandoned early on. Another disc by Josef Andreas Epp, his Omega Diskus, was built as a prototype in Pirna, GDR and became know as the Pirna Disc, but was reconfigured for recon flight with a much simplified powerplant and control surfaces. It was a failure and was scrapped. But Sukhanov wanted to build Soviet versions of German concepts and came up with Diskoplans 1-3 from 1958-1962. Two of the three flew, but the VVS wasn't interested in the odd craft for recon or fighter missions. However, Sukhanov persisted and built a 2/3rds replica of his X-Tail for space flight as an escape plane bolted on to an external tank- a design taken from Peenemunde and meant for a space station- long beofre the US space shuttle concept. This was premature and again not accepted; however, two of the Diskoplans were put on display at Monino (Diskoplan 1 and the X-Tail). Diskoplans 2 and 3 were either lost or scrapped...
Russian Diskoplans flew
in three designs

Russian circular planes once flew
Sukhanov designin’
Odd craft flyin’

VVS never demanded it
German designs lyin’ around
Sukhanov pushed his versions
Two out of three left the ground

Russian Diskoplans flew
in three designs
Five years time

Recon disk flew
Recon disk flew
Recon disk flew
Single pilot, circular body
Flyin’ saucer scare
Fourth from Peenemunde
X-Tail was beyond compare

Aviation oddities
Russian Diskoplans flew
in three designs
(Future Cosmoplan destiny)???

That's a plane!? Oh well, I guess it is, as long as it flies! ;-) 555! :-)

The Diskoplan I cabin looks a lot like that of the 1940's U.S. Aerocar. Appears to have had a similar fate. The Diskoplan II sort of reminds me of a Eurocoupe or perhaps some type of sailplane. I once saw a homebuilt coming in for a landing. It was a reverse stagger wing biplane. At first I thought I was witnessing a mid-air collision. I wish the composite aircraft builders would construct some full-size visual replicas of WWII planes that would be cheaper and safer to fly, so the few survivors could be placed in museums for future generations to appreciate.
