The Lyrics

Rather than post a huge amount of info and the associated pic links in the bottom box, I will just provide the info on this fascinating plane from one of my site entries (under Flying Flapjack section): http://www.laesieworks.com/ifo/lib/disc.html
Round plane XF5U
“Skimmer” of WW2

Vought wanted STOL for WW2
For Navy flyin’
Low aspect ratio tryin’

Navy wanted the circular bandit
Contra-props spinnin’ ‘round
Six .50 cals as armament
Shape made it hard to shoot down

Round plane XF5U
“Skimmer” of WW2
Speed 502 (mph)

Never flew
Never flew
Never flew
Shipped to Muroc, Cal
Sat all the while
Despite the secrecy
It was scrapped anyhow

From V-173
Round plane XF5U
“Skimmer” of WW2
(surpassed by jet supremacy)
Rare pic of Zimmerman's "flying shoes": http://www.howtoadvice.com/Image/Photo/CharlesZimmerman.jpg

Saw an episode of History Detectives last night that included film footage of a Sikorsky experimental craft called the "Flying Flapjack". Odd looking, but it appeared to have a very short take-off run, and it looked like it flew OK.

I'll bet that plane doesn't just fly around in circles... ;-) Great work Rob! 5's :-)

Patrickp do you ever click on my links??? It was the Vought-Zimmerman V-173 "Flying Flapjack" that led to the XF5U-1 "Skimmer" and Boeing had a rival circular design- the B.390/391...
