The Lyrics

Of WW2 history, the Axis plans to attack America are not that well-known past Pearl Harbor and the isolated Japanese attack on Oregon. The FUGO intercontinental balloons and Panama Canal mission remain obscure, but beyond that the German advanced plans and Italian lesser plans are very-little known. The Italians from 1942 planned to use 3 different types of planes to hit NY and the eastern ports- the Piaggio P.23R, the CANT Z.511A, and the Savoia-Marchetti SM-95. The last had permission, but the Armistice in 1943 prevented that one. My first story is of the P.23R raid which was thought-out by test pilot Nicolo Lana and proposed to the Italian AF. He would pilot the plane with a flight engineer named Maiao. The speed and distance plane would be converted over to bomber with an overload of fuel for maximum range carrying a 2,200 aerial mine to be dropped on NY for propaganda purposes. As the plane would lighten as fuel was spent the pilot would turn off one and then two of the three engines to make the attack after which he would ditch the aircraft near the Nantucket Lighthouse to be picked up by a loitering Italian submarine. But the Italian AF rejected his idea b/c they wanted an Italian warplane to do the job with a military crew- the Z.511A and later the SM-95. The sole PR.23R was damaged at Albenga anyway in a strong crosswind landing, so that settled that!!!
NY raid set for 1942
P.23R in wartime

Italians wanted to convert you
Bombin’ not spyin’
Ready for flyin’

Mussolini did demand it
Could be done, study found
Overloaded with fuel badly
2 engines would have to be shut-down

NY raid set for 1942
P.23R in wartime
To drop 1.1 ton mine

They flew you
They flew you
They flew you
Nicolo Lana was proud
Italian AF didn’t care
Wanted to use the CANT Z.511
They shot the P.23R plan down

Albenga emergency
NY raid set for 1942
P.23R in wartime
(plane damaged badly anyway)

I once saw a poster published circa 1915 or 1916 which depicted an enemy bomber flying over a flaming New York skyline. This was likely a reaction to the Black Tom explosion, when an island full of carelessly stored explosives blew up due to accident or German sabotage. The blast knocked out windows all over Manhattan.

Believe it or not, the Germans were working on an Amerika Bomber for WW1- a giant triplane, the Mannesmann-Poll. The Germans made plans for a huge bomber, the Mannesmann Poll, to attack the United States of America. It was a ten-engine tri-plane. It had 5 engine gondolas with each 2 engines. 4 gondolas were mounted on the mid wing, 1 gondola was mounted on the lower wing (in the middle of the wing). At the end of that war the Allied forces found a wheel of that bomber, so production of parts had already begun. The wheel had a diameter of 2.2 meter! http://www.nurflugel.com/Nurflugel/n_o_d/images/airplanes/pol.jpg http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/c/cc/Mannesmann_Poll_Wheel.jpg/800px-Mannesmann_Poll_Wheel.jpg http://3.bp.blogspot.com/__b97O6gn-yc/TRTMsRVjp8I/AAAAAAAAC1s/HCOB6cOymCM/s1600/Poll.jpg
