The fall of the Iron Curtain in 1989 proved that mankind didn't have to commit nuclear suicide. If the USA and USSR could settle their differences peacefully like they did, then SO CAN EVERYONE.

CW, as much as I woudl like to agree with you, I can't. There are people in this world that are evil and who will never change- period. Mankind's overall greed and lust and desire for violence to solve issues means that peace can only be maintained by counter-threat of violence. Even the Germans are NOT pacified- they were occupied for decades and have only been unified for just 21 years. The poor Bundeswehr has been trying to get involved in the Western Wars since 1991 with ODS but the stigma still prevents the German Govt. from authorizing direct military action on a wide scale. But as the WW2 generation dies out and the Holocaust is forgotten, that inner blood desire to glory on war will be made manifest. No matter how mankind tries the UN, the US, and the West are headed for downfall. Europe and China will be the aggressors as prophesied. One under the Antichrist and commanding 700 million and China with its 1.3 million. They are destined to clash. As an aside, the US and NATO don't belong in Libya's civil war even if we hate Gadhafi and his terrorist ways. If we intervene there, then what about all the corrupt and terrorist nations all over the globe? Why is the US/NATO not making war on Iran, Syria, and N Korea??? The BIGGER, REAL THREATS to humanity??? No, WW3 is inevitible and will occur long before resources run thin by 2050.

Sorry for lousy typos. China's 1.3 Billion!!! And Germany as the core of Europe is NOT Western despite appearances and co-operation. Historically, it is a CENTRAL power with desire for conquest in the East as well as West.
