Song Parodies -> "Tiny Argus As-292"

Original Song Title:

"I Put a Spell on You"

 (MP3)
Original Performer:

Screamin' Jay Hawkins

Parody Song Title:

"Tiny Argus As-292"

Parody Written by:

Robert D. Arndt Jr.

The Lyrics

The little-known As-292 started off as a German target drone (FZG) but was later modified to carry Zeiss precision cameras for low-level recon from late-1944 until early 1945. None were ever spotted nor shot-down. It was a very small target like a modern R/C aircraft with a cylindrical fuselage, fixed gear, and simple wings, tailplane, and tail rudder. The Allies were hunting for the Arado Ar-234 jet bomber used in the recon role and not the tiny As-292 that was used tactically. So it went unnoticed...
Tiny Argus As-292
converted target drone

Who knew all the sites you over-flew?
Recon flyin’
Zeiss camera spyin’

Flying low as a tactical field unit
As-292 circlin’ around
Snappin’ photos of the ground
No one saw it, none were shot down

Tiny Argus As-292
converted target drone
Flying slow…

Luftwaffe
Luftwaffe
Luftwaffe
German Army too
Allies lookin’ for Ar-234
What the fighters searched for
It certainly wasn’t you

Can’t hear me
Tiny Argus As-292
converted target drone

Another German aircraft I never heard of before now. Seems like they were way ahead of everyone else in terms of technology. Luckily for the rest of us, they were backward in their politics and management. I can think of another country that fits that description.

Not really an aircraft but a modified target drone- extremely small. I only have one pic of it in the Schiffer series of military books from the '90s on German missiles (V-1 also started out as a target drone design known as FZG-76 as well as Fi-103)...

Too many songs in one day, every day. Not fair to the rest of us. (and the rest of us don't have time to read 10-15 songs by one author every day, or any day, even if you do have time to write them, unfortunately.) I replied to your comment at Samurai Master's parody:

Tommy, There are no postings on Sat-Sun which means the 10-15 songs on Monday are actually split up from Friday to Monday before 6am PST. So that is 4 days of submissions= no more than 3-4 per day. That's not a large number. John Barry and some of the others have posted that many or more. It's just that I am disabled all day everyday and use the PC a lot. I am unaware there was a limit of songs and BTW I read everyone's songs everyday- ALL of them.

Rob, it's funny: My first arrival here, I submitted three songs on a Friday. This was back when the site often did Saturday updates, and sometimes Sunday. There were a lot more writers and readers then. They didn't show up on Sat., and I didn't notice that there hadn't been an update. (Being n00b, looking only for my own songs, d'oh)

So I submitted three more on Sat. No show on Sunday. I figured they were rejected for some reason. So *four* for Monday. Of course, all ten showed up on Monday -- but it was by no means deliberate, just ignorance on my part. I look back and laugh at my ten-song n00bie day. However, one veteran admitted that it's hard for new writers to be noticed, and that it might not have been a bad first-day tactic. He is the same one who suggested to me that 1-2 per day was a good number, and I've held to that ever since, with a few rare, and I hope, excusable, exceptions.

However, regardless of when you wrote them, they show up on Monday, and it seems you've been at or near double-digit postings almost every day -- I've been away from the site for a while, but a friend complained in e-mail. And FWIW, I raised the same issue when John Barry and the late Malcolm Higgins were doing that. The reason they did it was that they were racing to to the top spot on the Author page (numbered in order of songs posted); John made it to the top and wanted to stay there, despite Malcolm's attempts to keep up.

With Malcolm's recent passing, John seems to have slowed down considerably. Maybe coincidence, but I think not. The bad thing is that there's generally a trade-off between quality and quantity. John was my idol and unknowing mentor when I arrived here 5 1/2 years ago. Soon, there was a *very* friendly rivalry between us going on -- I won't plug the songs that referred to said rivalry, unless you ask -- but then John went for quantity, and became, essentially, a hack grinding out 300 spins of the same 88-word song, interrupted by brief bits of his previous genius. It made me very sad, and I left comments for him expressing my thoughts frankly, as I am here. But It was his choice to make.

There is no *official* limit of daily song posts by any author, although when Fiddlegirl and I once considered doing 16 in one day, I emailed ChuckyG and asked whether it might be possible, with advance notice, to give other authors a "heads-up" that that would be happening, and perhaps even reserve the day for us. The reasoning is what I said, that so many songs crowd out the home page and make others' entries harder to notice, especially at a quick glance.

He said it could probably be arranged, but in the end, we decided differently. The project was a parody of the entire Broadway musical and movie, "My Fair Lady". We realized that very few had either the time or the patience to read all 16 in one day, and so did it serial-style, posting two "scenes" every day, starting one Wednesday and finishing on the following Friday (8 posting days). This developed a steady following, which I doubt a single-day post would have. Then, for the convenience of future readers or those who wanted to refer back to it, send it to friends, etc., we also did *one single post* containing all 16 scenes in order, including the narration.

If you're a fan of MFL, the whole thing is at http://www.amiright.com/parody/60s/myfairladylernerloewe16.shtml ,
or you can see the individual ones, almost in order (the scenes are numbered, 1 of 16, 2 of 16 etc.), at our joint home page,
http://www.amiright.com/parody/authors/fiddlegirlandtommyturtle.shtml

If you're not a fan of the genre, or don't care to do so, no obligation, and no offense taken. On the other hand, it might provide some entertainment for those long days on the computer. :) As might some of my own 431 songs, ranging from academic to funny to political -- I'm mostly on your side -- to a bit on the racy side, if that's to your taste -- it isn't to everyone's liking, of course. (Yet oddly, seven or eight of said racy songs have consistently been among my top ten page-hitters for the past five years -- go figure! ;-D)

If you read everyone's songs every day, does that mean that we should be insulted that you read our two on Monday, but found them unworthy of comment? Or did you vote without commenting? The latter is fine, especially when the vote is 555, (I think that docking someone some points deserves an explanation of why, so they have a suggestion for how to improve.) but it's nice to know who one's fans are, even if it's just a quickie -- "Nice job - 555" or something.

Whatever your own situation (I'd express sympathy, but the Politically-Correct Police would nab me ;), you have to realize that most of us don't have that kind of free time. From the timing of a lot of comments, I assume that many readers are reading and commenting on their employer's time (and computer). I, for one, am self-employed. No workee, no payee. I've been absent from the site for months at a time; had I continued at my starting pace (100 songs in less than three months), I'd be over 2,000 by now. But it's all on my own, limited, free time.

When I'm here, I like to do the courtesy of acknowledging all v/c (votes and comments) on my songs, and try to read the other authors I like, or those whose songs look interesting, and usually, a courtesy look at a new writer, especially if they've commented on mine, to see if they're potentially worth adding to the "read" list. But I can *promise* that I won't ever read anyone who posts more than about five or six on a given day, because that's reducing the number I can read from those who limit themselves. And I got an email that a writer was being driven away from the site by your hogging the page, as it were.

This is just my opinion only, and as we all know, opinions are like anuses -- everybody has one. ;) But there are others who feel the same way. So take it as you like, or ignore it. But at least now you know a little more about what goes on behind the scenes. If I can ever help you, there's an email reCaptcha at the bottom of all my songs since 2009, which will reveal the email address.

Cheers, and thanks for reading.

The only time I have had 10+ songs in one day is a compilation that shows up on Monday. Normally, I have averaged only 3 songs per day (150 in 50 days)... Also, I rate people 555s, but do not feel I need to comment on that...

So by your logic, if I *compose* 2 songs/day starting on Jan. 1, and post all 730 of them on Dec. 31, that's not selfish overload?

Clearly, there's no point in further discussion, since your mind is made up. Since there is no official limit, do whatever you like. But please don't insult our intelligence with specious rationalizations. Posting 13 songs in one day is still 13 in one day, regardless of whether you wrote them over the weekend or over the past ten years or whatever. Cheers.

If Rob wants to post, let him post, JB did it, and I'm sure others have too, and Rob is not imitating anyone, whether or not the pacing is right, if he can write and post 5 - 10 parodies at a time, what's the problem with that! You don't have to read them you know TT. ;)

I generally look first at the original song to see if I recognize it. I must confess, I don't really remember "I Put a Spell on You", I will have to look it up on youtube. Once I do, I will have to write my own parody and add it to the list of distinguished writers who have taken it on. I can think of a few original songs that no one has taken on yet: "Calling Occupants of Interplanetary Craft" by the Carpenters, "Come, Follow, Follow Me" by Springfield Revival". How about setting some lyrics to "Old 1812" or "Chariots of Fire"? Well, don't do that. As much as I like lyrics, I like instrumentals better, and I prefer them "uncontaminated".
