The Japanese Shinano aircraft carrier of the Yamato-Class (as converted) was the largest warship ever sunk by a submarine. It was WW2's largest carrier at 872' and weighing 70,000 tons!!! It was not fully finished when she was ordered to another port to pick up Ohka suicide rocket aircraft and in the process fell to the USS Archerfish. She took 4 torpedos, but the belief that the damage was minimal meant 7 hrs of slow sinking that cost 1435 lives out of 2455 onboard. Her belt was 160-400mm and she was armed with 8x 127mm cannons, 35x triple 25mm AA guns as well as 22x 28 tube rocket launchers. Range was 10,000 miles @ 18 knots. She would have carried 47 aircraft and could theoretically launch bomber aircraft armed with ASMs in development.

Note: The US Navy was critical of Enright's claim of the unknown carrier, but credited him with sinking a 28,000 ton Hiyo carrier. Only after the war was it learned that the carrier was Shinano!
