"First Bomb Dropped by Balloon"

Parody Written by:

The Lyrics

Austria vs the self-proclaimed Republic of San Marcos in Venice 1849. A work steamer Vulcano is converted to launch Montgolfier type balloons over the city with intent to bomb. 30-40 were supposedly launched (some claim 3-5) but bad weather meant that only 3 made it over the city and only one bomb struck on July 15, 1849. Not worth the effort, the Austrians went back to artillery bombardment. However, it was the first bomb delivered by a balloon from a ship on the water. Later, Union flatships were used in the Civil War for recon and then seaplanes led to modern carriers.
First bomb dropped by balloon
1849

Austrian steamer Vulcano
Montgolfiers launchin'
''gainst Venice fur bombin'!

Thirty balloons on deck with
Single bombs pointed down
Each filled with shrapnel
Terror from the clouds
(Only one did it, scared the crowds)

First bomb dropped by balloon
1849
First of it's kind

Bad seas
Windy
Drifting
Effort not worth it, really
Just one bomb scare
In vicinity
Austrians back to artillery!

Carrier dreams
First bomb dropped by balloon
1849
(Next development, recon schemes)

Note: first strategic bombers in WW1 were Zeppelins followed by the massive Zeppelin-Staaken bombers. Germany developed bomber air pressurization, air to surface glide bombs, and bomber 20mm cannon defense... but too little, too late (1918)!

Were these manned balloons, or simply an earlier version of the WWII Japanese balloon bombs? Trying to time the delivery on a specific target would have been a real challenge then.

Unmanned. Bombs were timed for twenty-three minutes. Filled with shrapnel, the bomb explosion was meant to harm civilians.
